About The Position

Better is rebuilding home finance as an AI-native platform, aiming to transform a process that traditionally takes weeks into one that can be completed in seconds. With over $110 billion in loans funded and over $1.2 billion raised, Better operates at a significant scale while fundamentally rethinking homeownership. The company is seeking a highly creative, AI-native Lead Product Designer to define and enhance the future of the Better customer experience. This is a senior individual contributor role offering substantial influence. The designer will function as a design leader, taking ownership of complex product areas from conception to completion, shaping experience strategy, and elevating the standard of design craft, while remaining actively involved in the hands-on work. This role is best suited for individuals who are passionate about design quality and craft, excited by AI-native product experiences, comfortable navigating ambiguity and building from foundational principles, and energized by fast-paced, startup-like environments. The role involves acting as a liaison between product, design, and engineering teams, guiding strategic direction while maintaining close involvement with the execution of the work.

Requirements

  • 6–10+ years of product design experience in consumer-facing digital products
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality UX and visual design craft
  • Experience designing complex, multi-step workflows (not just simple apps)
  • Background in startup or high-growth environments preferred
  • Proven ability to operate as a senior IC with leadership influence
  • Strong systems thinking and ability to work across end-to-end journeys
  • High proficiency in Figma and modern prototyping tools
  • Demonstrated use of AI tools in your design workflow
  • Ability to work onsite in NYC

Responsibilities

  • Design and evolve AI-driven user journeys, including conversational, assistive, and predictive experiences.
  • Reimagine traditional flows (e.g., mortgage, refi, savings) into intelligent, goal-based experiences.
  • Explore new paradigms for AI-assisted decision-making and user guidance.
  • Own complex, multi-step product journeys from concept through execution.
  • Simplify high-friction workflows into intuitive, user-centered experiences.
  • Design across web and mobile, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints.
  • Set a high bar for visual design, interaction design, and UX clarity.
  • Deliver polished, high-fidelity designs with strong attention to detail.
  • Push the team toward more creative, differentiated product experiences.
  • Design scalable patterns across complex workflows and product surfaces.
  • Contribute to and evolve the design system.
  • Ensure consistency without sacrificing flexibility or creativity.
  • Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and leadership to shape direction.
  • Act as a design voice in strategic decisions.
  • Balance user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Mentor other designers through critique and collaboration.
  • Help elevate overall design culture and standards.
  • Act as a hands-on leader without direct people management responsibility.
  • Actively use tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Figma AI, and emerging technologies in your daily workflow.
  • Leverage AI for rapid ideation and prototyping, user flow exploration, and content generation and testing.
  • Continuously experiment with new tools to increase speed and creative output.
