About The Position

Bechtel is seeking a Lead Process Engineer for the Process Engineering department within its Manufacturing and Technology Business Unit. The role is assigned to data center projects and leads utility-system design from conceptual design through EPC execution. The engineer plans and conducts independent work requiring judgment in evaluating, selecting, applying, and adapting designs for critical facility systems, including cooling water, water treatment, fuel systems, compressed air, drainage, and other mechanical and process utilities. Work applies data center industry standards and codes, accepted design practices, client requirements, and quality standards for a global business unit. The position leads and mentors process engineers and designers and coordinates clients, vendors, field teams, operations, authorities, and other engineering disciplines. It defines system scope and design criteria, makes decisions on capacity and reliability, prepares and reviews engineering deliverables, manages changes and multidisciplinary workload, and helps ensure the systems support data center availability, reliability, energy efficiency, constructability, and project delivery objectives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or international equivalent and 8–10 years of relevant experience, or 12–14 years of relevant work experience in the data center industry.
  • Experience executing data center or mission-critical EPC utility engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering principles, data center design practices, client criteria, applicable regulations, ASME, NFPA, building and fire codes, and local authority requirements.
  • Knowledge of fluid flow, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and water chemistry, with experience developing utility demand, capacity, energy and water balances, load profiles, and design calculations.
  • Experience developing and reviewing utility flow diagrams, process schematics, operating narratives, P&IDs, interface and battery-limit documents, and equipment, line, valve, instrument, utility connection, and specialty-item lists.
  • Experience sizing and specifying pumps, heat exchangers, water treatment, storage tanks, fuel systems, packaged equipment, and control valves; performing hydraulic and line-sizing calculations; and establishing equipment and piping design pressures and temperatures for all operating cases.
  • Experience participating in 3D model, design, safety, constructability, operability, commissioning, and reliability reviews; closing actions; and coordinating relevant engineering, construction, and commissioning disciplines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and engineering software for hydraulic analysis, equipment sizing, documentation, and design coordination.
  • Knowledge of project execution, work processes, quality, change management, and document control.
  • Strong written, oral, and presentation skills, with demonstrated frontline leadership, continuous improvement, team building, and management of competing priorities, phased releases, and fast-track schedules.
  • Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer (PE) license, or willingness to obtain registration.
  • Experience supervising process or utility engineering teams within a large EPC organization; knowledge of Bechtel procedures and data center delivery practices.
  • Experience planning and executing medium or large, fast-track, multidisciplinary greenfield or brownfield data center EPC projects, including hyperscale, colocation, or other mission-critical facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor process engineers and designers while delivering data center utilities within scope, budget, schedule, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Apply engineering principles and data center practices to cooling, water, fuel, compressed air, drainage, and related utilities.
  • Make independent decisions on utility capacity, redundancy, reliability, operability, maintainability, energy efficiency, and constructability.
  • Coordinate clients, vendors, field teams, operations, authorities, and engineering disciplines to integrate systems, resolve interfaces, and communicate requirements and decisions.
  • Represent process engineering in meetings and present system design, capacity, reliability, status, risks, schedule, and operating philosophy.
  • Define scope, work plans, system boundaries, design criteria, capacity, redundancy philosophy, and battery limits across planning, design, procurement, construction, startup, and commissioning.
  • Prepare and review utility diagrams, P&IDs, calculations, balances, specifications, data sheets, narratives, reports, and technical proposals using approved criteria and standards.
  • Manage scope changes and multidisciplinary workload, assessing impacts on demand, capacity, redundancy, layout, cost, schedule, and phased deployment.
  • Ensure deliverables comply with codes, client criteria, project specifications, and data center availability, reliability, and energy-efficiency objectives.
  • Identify risks, constraints, complexity, and value opportunities; lead technical discussions and develop practical solutions that support timely, defensible decisions and mission-critical delivery.

Benefits

  • Robust benefits intended to support employees’ well-being and time to recharge; specific benefit offerings are not listed in the posting.
