About The Position

Acts as a lead and participates in the work of a small group of journey-level workers of the plumbing trade and other assigned staff engaged in installing, maintaining, modifying, and repairing a variety of plumbing systems and related equipment at a college. Schedules and oversees the work of a small group of journey-level workers and other assigned staff engaged in performing installation, replacement, maintenance, and repair on plumbing systems, equipment, appliances, controls and fixtures. Determines most efficient work procedures and techniques for assigned staff to ensure timely completion of plumbing projects, and makes sure that safety standards and procedures are followed. Installs, replaces, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems, equipment, appliances, controls and fixtures such as dish and clothes washing machines, vacuum breakers, backflow devices, gas appliance safety controls, steam tables, plumbing fixtures, drains, sinks, sumps, circulatory pumps, water heaters, and showers including water, gas, and waste system installations. Installs, maintains, and repairs gas piping systems for space heating. Installs, maintains, and repairs lawn-sprinkler systems, including automatic, semi-automatic, and manually operated types. Installs, maintains, and repairs air and gas welding systems. Maintains and repairs automatic fire-sprinkler systems. Surveys gas safety devices and other plumbing equipment which may need repair or replacement. Attends to trouble calls for emergency repairs to plumbing systems and equipment. Safely operates tools and equipment used in the plumbing trade. Maintains plumbing hand and power tools and equipment to ensure their safe and efficient operation. Maintains shop area and supplies in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Estimates job costs, prepares material lists and job records, and maintains an inventory of supplies and tools for assigned area. Provides supervisor with technical input on plumbing work concerning planned construction and work projects in progress. Assists in planning and developing modifications to existing plumbing systems. Inspects facilities for maintenance and safety problems related to plumbing systems and equipment. Assists in the inspection of plumbing work performed by outside contractors. Assists in developing job specifications, diagrams, and blueprints related to plumbing work. Provides training to staff assigned to unit. May schedule and oversee the work of other building trade workers assigned to unit. Performs related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of: Water, gas, waste, lawn- and fire-sprinkler systems and air and gas welding and other related systems
Current practices, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade
Installation, maintenance, alteration, and repair of plumbing systems and related equipment
Testing and inspection methods for plumbing systems and related equipment
State and local regulations pertaining to plumbing standards
Industrial and commercial building construction
Harmful effects of hazardous or toxic materials and the protection and safeguards required when working with or controlling such materials
Basic methods and procedures used in planning and estimating job projects
Basic heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems
Basic electrical systems and carpentry
Principles of training
Basic recordkeeping procedures
Capabilities of computer applications, systems, and hardware used in the plumbing trade
Using tools and operating equipment of the trade
Install, maintain, modify, analyze malfunctions, and repair plumbing systems and related equipment
Make accurate measurements and computations

Successful completion of a two-year program in the plumbing trade from a recognized college or university AND four years of full-time, paid experience in the plumbing trade under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor. Two years of the required experience must have been at the journey-level.
Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND completion of a recognized apprentice training program of at least four years’ duration in the plumbing trade AND two years of recent, full-time, paid, journey-level experience in the plumbing trade.
Graduation from high school or its equivalent AND six years of recent, full-time, paid experience in plumbing work under the supervision of a journeyman or crafts supervisor. Two years of the required experience must have been at the journey-level.
A valid Class "C" California driver's license.
Access to an automobile.
A valid backflow prevention tester certification issued by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health must be obtained within six months of employment.
Ability to lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
