Job Summary: Location: Nebraska Methodist Hospital Address: 8303 Dodge Street, Omaha, NE Work Schedule: Day shift 4am-1230pm (may vary, will discuss more in interview). 40 hrs./wk. Occasional weekend/holiday rotation, potential on call rotation required. Assist team members within the phlebotomy department.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, General Educational Development (GED) or equivalent required.
  • 3 years minimum Phlebotomy experience that qualifies for American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification eligibility required.
  • Lab Phlebotomy: Current experience in 5 of the 7 below. Demonstrated competency in all areas below required within 6 months of hire: Routine venipuncture. AND Routine dermal puncture. AND Arterial blood gas collection. AND Bone marrow assist. AND Specimen processing. AND Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. AND Port accessing and de-accessing.
  • Laboratory: Current experience in the list below. Demonstrated competency in all areas below required within 6 months of hire: Routine venipuncture AND Routine dermal puncture AND Arterial blood gas collection AND Specimen processing
  • Infusion Center: Current experience in the following areas required: Routine venipuncture AND Routing dermal puncture AND Specimen processing AND Port accessing and de-accessing
  • American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) certification required within 18 months of date of hire to maintain employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs duties of Phlebotomist I, II, III and IV to assist in the daily workload by performing assigned tasks.
  • Assists in daily workload.
  • Compliant per PPE guidelines.
  • Performs specimen processing Lab Phlebotomy: Performs arterial blood gas collection, bone marrow assists, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit specimen collection, and port accessing and de-accessing.
  • Laboratory: Performs arterial blood gas collection and POC testing.
  • Infusion Center: Performs basic dermal and venipuncture collection, performs port accessing and/or de-accessing.
  • Is a complete reference point for all staff members on the performance of all routine and complex phlebotomy procedures.
  • Maintains compliance with established processes: turn-around time expectations, collecting and handling specimens, proper documentation of sample collection.
  • Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
  • Review operations and work performed in the section; identify problems, and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Lab Phlebotomy and Laboratory: Prepare and maintain the department schedule and PTO's, making adjustment in schedule as necessary because of absences.
  • Communicates process/procedural changes in a timely manner and educate staff on the need for the change.
  • In the absence of the Service Leader or designee, responsible for the operation of the Phlebotomy department.
  • Identify problems and initiate immediate follow-up as necessary with the Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Accommodates patient and laboratory needs by professionally responding to requests for flexibility in duties, schedules, and staffing.
  • Identifies staff performance issues.
  • Initiates immediate follow-up as required.
  • Provides documentation of issues to the Service Leader or designee.
  • Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
  • Maintains compliance with establisher processes: turn-around time expectations, collecting and handling specimens, proper documentation of sample collection.
  • Accurately maintains charge tech responsibilities; work allocation, collection requirements, turn-around time management, and staff communication.
  • Identifies and responds to department supply and administrative needs and initiates immediate follow-up as necessary with the Service Leader or designee.
  • Identifies and responds immediately to department service and operational needs and initiates immediate follow-up as necessary with the Service Leader or designee.
  • Assists in staff orientation.
  • Assists in maintaining requiring employee competencies related to their skills.
  • Lab Phlebotomy and Laboratory: Prepares for and participates in inspections, Quality Assurance activities, properly maintains records, assists with preparing and updating section policies and procedures to fulfill the requirements of the accrediting agencies by following the providing protocol.
  • Oversees collection of data for QA activities as directly observed.
  • Assists with completing CAP checklist responses in preparation for on-site or self-inspection.
  • Completes and communicates policy and procedure changes in a timely manner and educates staff on the need for the change.
  • Procedure manuals are reviewed/revised at least every two years.
  • Assists Service Leader or designee with problem resolution and follow-up.
  • Infusion Center: Documents orientation, training, and education to ensure employee competence, provide excellent services, and meet accreditation requirements by effective verbal or written communication.
  • Organizational and department competencies are completed 100% of the time.
  • Evidence that new procedures and procedure revisions are read and understood.
  • Assists in training new and existing staff, including the review and completion of orientation checklists and skill training checklists.
  • Identifies problems and initiates immediate follow-up as necessary with the Phlebotomy Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Communicates efficiently by answering telephones, taking messages, and forwarding information or calls to appropriate staff.
  • Appropriate communication skills as directly observed by the Service Leader or designee.
  • Phone calls are acted upon promptly and handled in a professional manner per the customer service protocol as directly observed.
  • Employee brings issues of concern directly to the appropriate Service Leader or designee's attention as directly observed.
  • Identifies problems and initiates immediate follow-up as necessary with the Service Leader or designee to ensure accurate, timely laboratory services by using critical thinking skills and decisive judgment.
  • Participates in Continuing Education.
  • Lab Phlebotomy and Laboratory: One education session on developing leadership/management skills.
  • Completes required annual Continuing Education hours.
