About The Position

Under general supervision of the Medical Imaging Manager, this role follows established policies and procedures, using specialized equipment to produce Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) images for surgeons who perform specialized endovascular angiographic examinations in the OR. The technologist operates high speed PACS imaging equipment to select and capture images for archiving, and operates a pressure injector for delivering contrast media through catheters positioned by the physician. This position provides guidance and supervision to technologists and students on imaging procedures, assures efficient scheduling of patients and room availability, and develops appropriate work schedules for staff to support anticipated needs. The role also maintains appropriate inventories of medical and radiology supplies, assures operating integrity of equipment, and performs clerical and administrative functions as necessary. The Lead OR Special Procedures Technologist regularly performs all functions of an OR Special Procedures Technologist and maintains the highest level of compliance by meeting regulatory needs of organizations such as the American College of Radiology and The Joint Commission. All essential functions performed in the position reflect age-specific needs of geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. The role fosters patient and family-centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Lifespan and Rhode Island Hospital mission, vision, and values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

Requirements

  • Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists as well as two years formal training in an accredited School of Radiologic Technology required.
  • Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Must hold a current CPR certification from AHA, BLS for Healthcare Providers.
  • An in-depth knowledge of advanced imaging equipment and or procedures.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ of increasing responsibility and experience in a hospital Radiology department.
  • The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, their families, departmental staff, physicians, and others.
  • Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment, push portable equipment, transfer and position patients.
  • Conceptual ability to determine means of providing requested radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality based on specifics of each case.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Responsibilities

  • Schedules work time, holidays, sick time and vacation coverage of employees within unit.
  • Provides assistance with problems and communicates new or changed policies and procedures to unit personnel.
  • Counsels, guides, and evaluates the performance of employees regularly assigned to the unit. May provide input on hiring or disciplinary action.
  • Operates x-ray equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques.
  • Utilizes portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery, and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Reports equipment performance problems and keeps equipment in good functioning condition.
  • Works with vendors as needed to ensure elective / PM repair work can be accomplished in a short a time frame as possible and without interruption of normal OR operations.
  • Responsible for the efficient patient flow by scheduling patient examinations and coordinating work assignment of employees while considering the current volume of examination orders, type of radiography required, and the availability of equipment and facilities.
  • Provides for the clinical experience of radiologic Technology students, instructing and guiding students through radiological procedures in the area of responsibility. May review performance of student with instructor.
  • Regularly checks radiographs performed by technologists in the unit for quality control purposes.
  • Performs clerical and/or administrative tasks such as conducting inventory and ordering supplies; compiling statistics; checking equipment for proper operating condition and arranging for repair when needed; providing input for budgetary needs.
  • Assumes charge-duty responsibility during weekends in the absence of regularly scheduled supervisory personnel on a routine basis.
  • Regularly performs all functions of an OR Special Procedures Technologist.
  • Trains newly hired Radiologic Technologists to work in the specialized OR suites as needed.
  • Provides in-service education for students and staff technologists or other staff members and maintains appropriate records.
  • Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.
  • May provide guidance to students or other unit personnel in methods, techniques and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
