About The Position

The Lead Ophthalmic Technician plays a crucial role in the daily operations of the clinic, assisting the Clinic Manager with both administrative and clinical responsibilities. This position involves supervising ophthalmic assistants and diagnostic technicians, fostering a positive and accountable work environment, and providing direct patient care. The Lead Ophthalmic Technician is expected to set an example for staff collaboration and deliver exceptional patient care.

Requirements

  • Two years of Ophthalmic Technician experience in an ophthalmology setting
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in EMR and computer literacy
  • Well organized and attentive to detail
  • HIPAA knowledge and compliance

Nice To Haves

  • JCAHPO certification (COA/COT) recognizing more advanced general knowledge and specific use of ophthalmic instruments as pertaining to the level of COT
  • Successful completion of two or more years of college and/or university level courses
  • CPR preferred, but not required

Responsibilities

  • Assists Clinic Manager in supervising Ophthalmic Assistants (certified and non-certified), and Diagnostic Technicians in their daily duties
  • Assists Clinic Manager with day-to-day administrative and clinical operations of the assigned location
  • Represents, supports, and promotes a positive image of Key-Whitman Eye Centers when dealing with patients inside and outside of the organization
  • Creates and sustains a highly accountable and inspired work environment where employees deliver exceptional patient care; sets the example for how operational and clinical staff work together by demonstrating shared leadership with the Clinic Manager
  • Performs direct patient care consistent with general clinic responsibilities and any added responsibilities according to clinic needs
  • Obtains accurate patient history
  • Performs lensometry
  • Performs diagnostic testing of the eye while having a basic understanding and knowledge of these tests such as HVF, HRT, IOLmaster, biopen and basic fundus photography
  • Obtains accurate visual acuities with basic optics understanding
  • Demonstrates ability to perform functional ocular measurements of the eye such as color vision testing, BAT testing, schirmer tests and Amsler grid tests
  • Demonstrates ability to perform accurate and repeatable refractometry
  • Administers topical ophthalmic medications
  • Performs accurate tonometry by tonopen or applanation
  • Maintains and sterilizing surgical instruments
  • Assists the doctor with the installation of punctual plugs
  • Verbalizes post operative instructions in a clear and professional manner to patients for any procedure performed at Key-Whitman Eye Center
  • Understands basic ocular pharmacology
  • Other duties as assigned
