About The Position

MITRE’s L614 - Intelligent Network Services Department supports complex network challenges, and this requisition is for the MITRE Army Resilient C2 and Communications work program. The program develops innovative capabilities for U.S. Army sponsors by analyzing, experimenting, prototyping, applying mission engineering, and leveraging technical expertise and operational understanding. It works across the Army and with industry to mature tactical and enterprise command-and-control, network, communications, and cyber capabilities, with an emphasis on accelerating fielded capabilities. The role supports the development, experimentation, integration, and fielding of the Army’s Next Generation Command and Control (NGC2). This includes collaborating with warfighters, prototyping and refining requirements, exploring commercial and existing government solutions, integrating capabilities such as sensors, electronic warfare, autonomy, and counter-UAS, and assisting the Army with agile acquisition approaches. MITRE seeks a network engineer with technical leadership who can understand Army operations, design Army networks, and lead laboratory and field experiments to compare alternatives and make recommendations. The position requires experience with tactical and enterprise networks, understanding networking components within the broader Army network, leading laboratory assessments, gathering relevant data, and providing recommendations. The role requires on-site support four days a week in Aberdeen, Maryland, with travel to operational and test locations as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, or a related technical field, and at least 8 years of relevant experience supporting Army tactical programs, communications systems, or defense integration efforts; equivalent Army military experience through prior enlisted service is accepted.
  • Demonstrated experience engineering, configuring, integrating, and troubleshooting complex IP network architectures in tactical, enterprise, or DoD environments.
  • Strong knowledge of routing, switching, segmentation, redundancy, and operational network design principles beyond basic networking concepts.
  • Experience supporting Army enterprise or operational networking organizations such as NETCOM, DISA, or tactical signal units.
  • Basic understanding of tactical transport technologies, including satellite communications (SATCOM) and line-of-sight (LOS) systems, and their impacts on network performance and operational architectures.
  • Understanding of Army operational planning processes, mission execution workflows, and warfighter communications requirements.
  • Active Secret U.S. Government-issued security clearance, with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI U.S. Government-issued security clearance. U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance eligibility.
  • Ability to provide on-site support four days a week in Aberdeen, Maryland, and travel to operational and test locations as required.

Nice To Haves

  • Active TS/SCI clearance or eligibility to obtain TS/SCI.
  • Prior U.S. Army Signal Corps experience through military service, government civilian service, or tactical communications contracting support.
  • Current or previous Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) certification.
  • Experience designing or supporting software-defined networking (SDN) implementations in tactical or enterprise environments.
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure cloud environments and hybrid cloud/network architectures.

Responsibilities

  • Design, integrate, and support tactical communications network architectures for Army operational environments, including command posts, mounted platforms, and expeditionary network infrastructures.
  • Develop and maintain IP-based network architectures using routing, switching, software-defined networking (SDN), and transport technologies to support mission command and operational communications requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and trusted advisory support to government customers and military leadership on network architecture design, operational constraints, integration risks, and emerging technical solutions.
  • Analyze operational requirements, mission threads, and Army tactical workflows to ensure network architectures align with warfighter needs and operational objectives.
  • Lead laboratory and field experiments to compare network alternatives, assess capabilities, gather relevant data, and make recommendations.
