About The Position

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist performs analysis of blood, urine, stool, and body fluids. This role involves evaluating reports based on clinical and analytical conditions and maintaining the quality of laboratory testing. Additionally, the Lead MLS has oversight of policies, procedures, and specific testing within a larger department, such as Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or Blood Bank. The position includes additional duties beyond those of a standard Medical Laboratory Scientist, which may encompass roles like Lab Safety Officer, key administrator of the temperature monitoring system, key operator on laboratory analyzers, responsibility for non-routine instrument maintenance and upkeep, oversight of quality control, involvement in test method validation, oversight of small equipment, chargemaster maintenance, proficiency testing program management, supply ordering and inventory oversight, and serving as a Meditech Superuser. The Lead MLS is also responsible for training staff in their area, educating them on departmental changes, addressing staff errors, and acting as the primary point person for their department to raise problems, concerns, ideas for improvement, and propose new or old testing changes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related discipline.
  • Registry or Certification by professional organization such as the ASCP or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, speak and write English effectively.
  • Must have strong problem solving and critical thinking skills.

  • Takes initiative to complete work on time.
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Accurate and detail oriented.

Nice To Haves

  • At least one year experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist I with above average performance.
  • Preferably one year experience as a MLS II.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analysis of blood, urine, stool, and body fluids.
  • Evaluate reports on the basis of the clinical and analytical conditions.
  • Maintain the quality of the Laboratory testing.
  • Have oversight of policies, procedures, and specific testing within a larger department (Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or Blood Bank).
  • Serve as Lab Safety Officer (if assigned).
  • Act as key administrator of the temperature monitoring system (if assigned).
  • Serve as key operator on laboratory analyzer (if assigned).
  • Be responsible for non-routine instrument maintenance and upkeep (if assigned).
  • Oversee quality control (if assigned).
  • Be involved in test method validation (if assigned).
  • Oversee small equipment (thermometer, pipettes, timers etc.) (if assigned).
  • Perform chargemaster maintenance (if assigned).
  • Manage the proficiency testing program (if assigned).
  • Handle supply ordering and oversight of inventory (if assigned).
  • Serve as Meditech Superuser (if assigned).
  • Train staff in the area they lead (if assigned).
  • Educate staff on changes within their departments.
  • Address any issues that arise with general errors made by staff within their areas.
  • Serve as the general point person for that department.
  • Bring up any problems, concerns, ideas for improvement, and new/old testing changes that may need to be made.
