About The Position

The Lead Medical Lab Assistant is skilled in collecting and processing all laboratory specimens for testing and can perform waived testing under direct supervision. They handle various pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical tasks in the laboratory, and provide supervisory assistance for a lab section. Responsibilities include evaluating specimen acceptability, entering patient and test information into the computer, responding to customer requests, and utilizing computer systems proficiently for accuracy. The position requires effective communication between the laboratory, clinical services, and physicians, and leadership in quality, lean, and process improvement activities. Clerical assistance for billing, troubleshooting, data gathering, and verification of lab orders and labels is also part of the role. The Lead Medical Lab Assistant efficiently solves problems for their assigned section using necessary computer systems and documentation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor
  • Med Lab Technician (ASCP) within 180 Days
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in any laboratory field.
  • Knowledge of laboratory and hospital regulations
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and make immediate decisions
  • Laboratory technical skills for pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical tasks
  • Able to work and provide leadership for assigned areas and communicate effectively

Responsibilities

  • Collects and receives samples for testing into the laboratory, verifies proper patient preparation sample collection, and sample transport requirements.
  • Ensures Standard Precautions and personal protective equipment are utilized for collecting and processing of all types of specimens.
  • Demonstrates good verbal, non-verbal, written, and electronic communication skills.
  • Responsible for effective communications between the laboratory, clinical services and physicians.
  • Leads quality, lean and process improvement activities.
  • Clerical assistance for billing, troubleshooting, data gathering, and verification of lab orders and labels.
  • Reviews and utilizes all necessary computer systems and documentation for accuracy and efficiently solves problems for assigned section.
