Department Language Services Job Summary Under minimum supervision, provides medical interpretation during routine and complex medical and non-medical appointments, group sessions and family meetings. Provides translation support for non-complex, short requests. Participates in the applicant interviewing process and supports supervisor in the onboarding process, including coordination of shadowing and training opportunities. Responsible for collecting, measuring, and reporting on quality assurance metrics and providing feedback and coaching to staff regarding these metrics. Serves as primary backup support for dispatch operations, including coordinating external vendors appointments and scheduling in-person interpretation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited interpreter training program (e.g., Bridging the Gap, The Community Interpreter) required.
  • 4-6 years of medical interpreter experience required.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English and Spanish and pass Medical Interpreter screening and role play.
  • Excellent customer service skills, attention to detail, active listening and communication skills
  • Exceptional knowledge medical terminology, healthcare vocabulary and cultural awareness to interpret accurately in a healthcare setting.
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a high pace environment.
  • Ability to multitask, excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to provide interpretation in a variety of modalities and methods, including in-person, video, phone, simultaneous, consecutive and group setting.
  • Microsoft office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of call center technology.

Responsibilities

  • Utilizes expressive and receptive communication skills in English and at least one other language sufficient to facilitate communication between the client and health care staff in assigned service areas. (30%)
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of anatomy, medical terms and symptoms by accurately conveying information between the patient and the care provide. (5%)
  • Accurately interprets both the content and the spirit of the communications and seeks clarifications, as needed. (5%)
  • Reviews accuracy of translations for Denver Health documents. Responsible for proof reading and editing of translated materials to ensure the quality of translations and is responsible for the up keep of translation database. (5%)
  • Assists the Medical Interpreter Program Manager in coordinating the activities of the medical interpreters. Help to train new staff, and prepares necessary reports for Manager. (5%)
  • Assures that coverage is provided timely and according to needs. (5%)
  • Runs reports on a monthly basis to be reviewed by manager. (5%)
  • Assists in the monitoring, upkeep and handling of Obscure and Sign Language requests. (5%)
  • Provides training and supervision to Volunteers and Student Medical Interpreters per established guidelines. (5%)
  • Coordinates recruitment of bi-lingual Volunteers and Student Medical Interpreters. (5%)
  • Reviews work upon completion for adherence to guidelines, quality and timeliness standards and provides on going feedback regarding level of performance to Program Manager. (5%)
  • Assists Medical Interpreter Program Manager with scheduling and monitoring of the Spanish Language Assessment. (5%)
  • Acts as a backup for in-person interpreter requests. (5%)
  • Establishes and maintains effective, professional working relationships with clients, staff, the public and other customers. (5%)
  • Maintains and enhances skills, performance proficiency and professional development (5%)
