About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated ASL Lead Interpreter to join our healthcare video remote interpreting (VRI) team in a Designated Interpreter (DI) capacity. This hybrid role combines direct interpreting support for a designated Deaf professional with leadership and administrative duties across the broader ASL interpreting team. The ideal candidate will deliver consistent, high-quality interpretation while supporting team operations, mentoring interpreters, and upholding service standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent professional experience in interpreting.
  • 3–5 years of medical interpreting experience using American Sign Language.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience, ideally in a healthcare or language services setting.
  • Deep knowledge of Deaf culture and professional interpreting standards.
  • Comfortable using VRI platforms and interpreting technology.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to handle high-stakes conversations with professionalism and discretion.
  • Hybrid position: primarily remote with potential on-site responsibilities as needed.
  • Flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Fast-paced healthcare environment with prolonged video interpreting periods.
  • Frequent video meetings, platforms, and screen-based tasks.
  • Must have a HIPAA Compliant Workspace (i.e., Chair, Desk, and a backdrop in color Chroma Blue)
  • You must use a professional backdrop of a Chroma Blue color that shall have no variations within the camera view.
  • Must have a dedicated high-speed, private, and secure internet connection: The device must be connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. Minimum download speed 10 Mbps / Minimum upload speed 10 Mbps.
  • Headphones: Use a noise-cancelling, USB-wired headset with a built-in microphone (Note: Wireless/Bluetooth headphones unacceptable).
  • Must have a Web Camera (i.e., USB video camera with integrated H.264 hardware or a built- in video camera with 720p or higher resolution).
  • Dress code: Dress professionally and wear solid colors.

  • Prior experience as a Designated Interpreter strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Designated Interpreter Role Serve as the primary interpreter for a Deaf staff member or executive, ensuring access to all daily communication, including meetings, trainings, and one-on-one interactions.
  • Develop strong rapport and contextual knowledge to provide consistent, accurate interpretation tailored to the designated individual’s preferences and communication style.
  • Support communication in a variety of internal and external contexts, including high-level meetings, presentations, and decision-making discussions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries at all times.
  • Interpreting Services Provide high-quality ASL video remote interpreting services for healthcare appointments and encounters.
  • Interpret during complex medical interactions, maintaining linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity.
  • Work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments as required.
  • Leadership & Administration Supervise, coach, and mentor ASL interpreter team members.
  • Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding of new interpreters.
  • Manage interpreter scheduling to ensure full coverage, including 24/7 shifts.
  • Serve as an escalation contact for interpreting concerns or platform issues.
  • Represent the ASL team in internal meetings and cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Quality Assurance & Training Monitor interpreting sessions for quality assurance, adherence to HIPAA, and healthcare communication standards.
  • Lead ongoing training initiatives, especially focused on medical terminology and interpreter ethics.
  • Document and report performance issues; recommend and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Promote a culture of growth, professionalism, and accountability.
