About The Position

Overall oversight of the Heavy Duty shop. Manage and direct the activities of other heavy duty mechanics. Responsible for the satisfactory performance of both scheduled and unscheduled service work. Must have ability and willingness to make difficult decisions. The regular hours of work are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am - 3:00 pm. In addition, this position performs essential snow and ice control operations and will be on a 24 hour on-call status.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience of International, Caterpillar, Cummins, John Deere, Freightliner, Case, Allison automatic transmissions, Bendix and Wabco brake systems, and Detroit diagnostic equipment
  • Knowledge of equipment electronic system diagnostics
  • Knowledge of diesel and gas engines and transmissions
  • Knowledge of wire welders, “stick” type welders
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems and hose replacement
  • Knowledge of machine shop tools and equipment
  • Ability to operate single axle trucks, tandem axle trucks, and semi tractors with standard and automatic transmissions
  • Knowledge of basic automotive electrical circuits, relays, diodes, capacitors and how to use them
  • Completion of a standard high school program or equivalent.
  • Must possess a Class B Driver's License (CDL) with air brakes; Class A Preferred
  • Minimum of ten years of experience maintaining and repairing diesel trucks and equipment.
  • Minimum of five years of experience working on Tier 4 emissions.
  • Minimum of two years of related work experience in welding of vehicles and equipment.
  • Experience in computer software including Excel, Word, Outlook, databases, and fleet management.
  • Ability to perform difficult physical labor and to regularly lift and/or carry objects weighing 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Manage and direct the activities of other heavy duty mechanics.
  • Responsible for the satisfactory performance of both scheduled and unscheduled service work.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with County safety code and established safe work practices.
  • Bill out parts on work orders using fleet maintenance software.
  • Provide specifications for purchasing equipment, shop tools, trucks, construction equipment, and trailers.
  • During snow and ice callouts work as a mechanic or snowplow operator.
