About The Position

The Lead Mechanic is a senior-level shop leader who oversees all mechanical and operational activities at the branch, independently of the Operations Manager. This role ensures unit readiness, workflow execution, and safety compliance while also serving as a traveling trainer and mentor for Mechanics and Technicians across other branches. The Lead Mechanic plays a critical role in maintaining high service standards, providing hands-on expertise, and supporting consistent processes company-wide.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • At least 5 years of mechanic experience on vacuum trucks, diesel engines, and hydraulic systems.
  • 2+ years in a leadership or senior mechanic role.
  • Expert-level skills in diagnostics, repairs, and mechanical systems (including clutches, brakes, A/C systems, hydraulics, and electrical).
  • Familiarity with ERP systems and Fleet Management platforms (e.g., Fleetio).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to lead and mentor others.
  • A minimum of 2 years of driving experience in accordance with CDL or Non-CDL requirements is required.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a current DOT certification (CDL or Non-CDL).
  • Good communication skills, both written and oral.

Responsibilities

  • Independently oversee the day-to-day operations of the shop, ensuring all vacuum units and equipment are maintained, repaired, and rent-ready.
  • Manage workflow, assign tasks to mechanics and techs, and track completion of work orders and repairs.
  • Act as the go-to expert for all diagnostics, complex repairs, and technical issues.
  • Lead the development and execution of the Plan of the Day and Plan of the Week.
  • Manage inventory levels for parts and supplies, placing proactive orders as needed.
  • Ensure accurate, timely updates to the Fleet Management System and compliance with all documentation and safety protocols.
  • Maintain shop efficiency and quality control in alignment with company standards and branch goals.
  • Support field operations as needed for demos, repairs, or service calls.
  • Travel to other branches to train, mentor, and support Mechanics and Technicians on diagnostics, repair procedures, and shop systems.
  • Serve as interim shop lead during key staffing transitions or OM absences.
  • Help implement standardized repair practices and ensure consistent use of company tools, systems, and safety protocols across locations.
  • Evaluate skill levels of shop personnel and recommend further training or process adjustments to OMs.
  • Support start-up efforts at new branches or during shop expansions.
  • Safely and efficiently operate vehicles and adhere to all federal and state driving regulations to support daily operations and customer needs.
