About The Position

The Maintenance mechanic will safely install, maintain, repair, move, replace, modify, upgrade, troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on industrial food equipment and devices used in production, office and utility areas. Provide support as needed to Production, Quality and Safety. Serves as a mentor and helps train production operators. The Maintenance mechanic will be a team player. As a Department Lead, this role involves ensuring GMPs are enforced, communicating effectively, assisting with hiring and disciplinary actions, reviewing and delegating work orders, providing technical expertise and training, monitoring work performance, evaluating skill levels, assisting with performance reviews, ensuring shop cleanliness, updating activity logs, and enforcing safety policies. The Lead will also train new hires on preventative maintenance, department introductions, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Possess a 2-year technical degree in a maintenance field or minimum of 5 years of experience in a maintenance field.
  • Two of the five years must be in a food processing or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to use simple math; adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to take measurements.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems without supervision.
  • Ability to read and follow instructions.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics and diagrams.
  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot mechanical equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work overtime and weekends.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge of bearings, bushings, gear boxes, fixed/variable power transmissions systems, pump seals, clutches, brakes, manual/automatic control valves, motors, couplings, hydraulics, pneumatics, pumps, variable frequency drives, transducers, solenoids, relays, motor starters, switches (flow, Photo, proximity, level, pressure, etc.), Encoders, tachometers, AC and DC drive controls, pipe, tubing, pipe fittings, circuit boards, Programmable logic controllers, transmitters, machining, welding, and fabrication.

Responsibilities

  • Safely install, maintain, repair, move, replace, modify, upgrade, troubleshoot, diagnose, adjust, calibrate and perform preventive maintenance on industrial food equipment and devices.
  • Provide support to Production, Quality, and Safety departments.
  • Serve as a mentor and train production operators.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, adjust, and replace equipment and components involving mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, and relay logic systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Communicate equipment breakdown status to shift dispatcher.
  • Move equipment and machinery using standard methods of lifting, rigging, hoisting, blocking, skidding, and rolling.
  • Perform work in a safe, clean, thorough, and professional manner.
  • Assess situations, develop solutions, and estimate timeframes for work requests.
  • Research and compile parts lists for work requests.
  • Adhere to all company and department policies and procedures.
  • Complete assigned work in an acceptable and productive timeframe.
  • Accurately document information on work orders (time, parts used, etc.).
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals for troubleshooting and parts identification.
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere and promote good relationships with co-workers.
  • Ensure that GMP’s are enforced at all times.
  • Communicate quickly and precisely, both written and verbally.
  • Ensure department and company policies and procedures are enforced at all times.
  • Assist with interviewing and hiring maintenance staff when requested.
  • Assist with disciplinary action when associates fall short of expectations when requested.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, review maintenance work orders and delegate work to maintenance staff, following up to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Provide necessary support and technical expertise to maintenance staff.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, ensure maintenance staff accurately documents information on work orders.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, evaluate performance and quality of work performed by maintenance staff.
  • Assist maintenance staff in troubleshooting equipment and training mechanics on tasks.
  • Monitor and follow up with maintenance staff to ensure work is performed accurately and timely.
  • Ensure estimated time of completion is adhered to and communicate status of breakdowns.
  • Evaluate current skill levels of each mechanic and suggest education opportunities.
  • Assist the maintenance supervisor with annual and semi-annual performance reviews.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, ensure maintenance shop and individual work areas are cleaned and organized.
  • Update Redzone activity per the Redzone procedure.
  • Update next shift on the status of work (required to come in 15 min before scheduled shift).
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, ensure time allocations sheets are completed accurately and reviewed each day.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, enforce all company and department safety policies.
  • In the absence of the maintenance supervisor, communicate estimated time of completion to production, planning, and scheduling when breakdowns occur.
  • Train new hires/maintenance staff on preventative maintenance activities, department introductions, facility, equipment, department policies and procedures, and equipment manuals.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the maintenance supervisor.
