About The Position

The Salvation Army's Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Phoenix, Arizona is seeking a part-time Lead Lifeguard. This role is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program and facilities, assisting the Aquatics Manager. The Lead Lifeguard will also serve as a swim instructor and participate in guarding rotations to ensure operational standards are met. This position requires maintaining clear communication with staff, volunteers, and participants, enforcing equipment policies, performing chemical checks and cleaning procedures, attending staff meetings, conducting lifeguard audits, and ensuring the proper maintenance and utilization of aquatics equipment. The role also involves reporting injuries according to procedure, maintaining a safe working environment, reporting facility issues, and adhering to Salvation Army policies and the Kroc Center's Code of Ethics. Additional duties may be assigned as they relate to the off-season Lead Lifeguard role. A criminal background check is required.

Requirements

  • Possession of current certificates in: CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR Pro), First Aid, AED, and Lifeguard Training (American Red Cross, Ellis, StarGuard).
  • Equivalent training certificates may be accepted.
  • Must possess or obtain StarGuard Swim Instructor certification within 30 days of being hired.
  • Must have a minimum of a year or more experience as a certified lifeguard.
  • Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public; work cooperatively with others; analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Meet all health & safety regulations as defined by the Health Department & The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
  • Be dependable.
  • Ability to handle security and crisis situations, calmly.
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance.
  • Successfully complete a 500-yard swim and retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool.
  • Ability to operate telephone, a desktop or laptop computer, as well as the ability to access and produce information from a computer, and to understand written information.

Responsibilities

  • Give oversight to the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program & facilities with the Aquatics Manager.
  • Step in as a swim instructor and be in the rotation of guarding when needed to meet operating standards.
  • Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participants. This may include writing of internal memos, weekly department meetings, work schedules, flyers, newsletters, and one-on-one discussions with Aquatics Manager.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with the other on-site directors of the RJKCCC program.
  • Follow and enforce equipment checkout program. Report defects, necessary repairs, etc.
  • Perform chemical checks by policy a number of times during shift.
  • Perform cleaning procedures such as vacuuming pool and spa, upkeep of cleaning deck, brushing entire sides of pool and spa, tiles scrubbed in entire pool and spa, etc., should be documented and signed off on date completed following scheduled number of times per week (dependent on season).
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings as directed by the Aquatics Manager.
  • Conduct audits of lifeguards utilizing proper documentation.
  • See that all equipment assigned to the aquatics facilities is maintained and properly utilized.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem solving.
  • See that injuries are reported timely and according to procedure utilizing incident and Notice of Concern reports.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Report all harmful problems with facilities to the Aquatics Manager.
  • Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain the Code of Ethics policy, which has been established for the Kroc Center.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as they relate to the position of Lead Lifeguard Off Season.
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check.
