About The Position

The Salvation Army - Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Phoenix, Arizona is seeking a full-time Lead Lifeguard II. This role provides oversight to the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program, facilities, and staff members in conjunction with the Aquatics Manager. The position requires Saturday shifts, and potentially split shifts and holidays, to meet departmental needs. The Lead Lifeguard II will also serve as a swim instructor and participate in guarding rotations to ensure operating standards are met. Maintaining clear communication channels with staff, volunteers, and participants is crucial, involving written memos, weekly meetings, work schedules, flyers, newsletters, and one-on-one discussions. The role also involves updating programs in CCMS/RMS, cooperating with other program departments, and maintaining a professional attitude. Responsibilities include enforcing equipment checkout, reporting defects, ensuring proper maintenance and utilization of aquatics equipment, and reporting facility issues to management. Chemical checks and cleaning procedures for the pool and spa are required and must be documented. Assistance with pump room maintenance, hair trap changes, and backwashing is also part of the role. The Lead Lifeguard II must attend scheduled staff and management meetings, conduct audits of swim instructors and lifeguards, ensure timely reporting of injuries, maintain a safe working environment, and conduct employee evaluations. Assisting with timekeeping and adhering to Salvation Army Policies and Procedures are also key duties. The position also involves recognizing and referring individuals with spiritual needs. Other assigned duties related to the Lead Lifeguard II position will be performed as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain StarGuard Elite Lifeguard Instructor Trainer, American Safety & Health Institute Authorized Instructor, and StarFish Instructor Trainer certifications within 30 days of employment.
  • Must have a minimum of a year or more experience as a certified lifeguard.
  • Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Work cooperatively with others.
  • Analyze situations and adopt a quick and effective course of action.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Meet all health & safety regulations as defined by the Health Department & The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to use appropriate positive discipline consistently.
  • Be dependable.
  • Ability to handle security and crisis situations, calmly.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to swim with proficiency and endurance.
  • Must successfully complete a 500-yard swim and retrieve a 10-pound brick from the bottom of the pool.
  • Ability to operate telephone, a desktop or laptop computer, as well as the ability to access and produce information from a computer, and to understand written information.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight to the day-to-day operations of the aquatics program, facilities, and staff members in conjunction with the Aquatics Manager.
  • Step in as a swim instructor and be in the rotation of guarding when needed to meet operating standards.
  • Maintain clear channels of communication with staff, volunteers and program participants.
  • Update and add programs into CCMS/RMS.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with the other program departments.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and approach to problem-solving.
  • Follow and enforce equipment checkout program.
  • Report defects using Asset Essentials.
  • See that all equipment assigned to the aquatics department is maintained and properly utilized.
  • Report all immediate harmful problems with facilities to the Aquatics Manager and Facilities Director.
  • Perform chemical checks by policy a number of times during shift.
  • Perform cleaning procedures such as vacuuming pool and spa, upkeep of cleaning deck, brushing entire sides of pool and spa, tiles scrubbed in entire pool and spa, etc., and document and sign off on date completed.
  • Help maintain pump room, changing of hair traps, and backwashing.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and management team meetings when directed by the Aquatics Manager.
  • Conduct audits of swim instructors and lifeguards utilizing proper documentation by StarGuard.
  • Ensure that any injuries are reported timely and according to procedure utilizing incident and/or Notice of Concern reports.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Conduct employee evaluations.
  • Assist with timekeeping.
  • Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  • Recognize the spiritual needs of individuals, which may require referral to the officer/pastor who is an ordained minister of religion.
  • Perform other duties as assigned as they relate to the position of Lead Lifeguard II.
