About The Position

Type One Energy is seeking a Lead Laboratory Technical Associate to join their team in Knoxville, TN. This role is crucial for the FusionDirect development program, which aims to create an optimized stellarator fusion energy system. The Lead Laboratory Technical Associate will be responsible for assembling equipment, planning and executing experiments, mentoring laboratory personnel, managing laboratory resources, and presenting experimental results. A safety-first mindset is essential for this position.

Requirements

Minimum 10 years of experience in a development laboratory using UHV systems and instruments
Solid understanding and experience using the globally harmonized system of classification and labelling of chemicals
Demonstrated experience using SDS and applying them to experimental planning, safety measures, and PPE
In depth knowledge of UHV systems, components, instruments, and best practices
Experience with cryogenic systems including cryocoolers, liquid nitrogen, and liquid helium
Mechanical and electrical assembly skills for UHV and cryogenic equipment
In depth knowledge of data acquisition and analysis
Presentation skills
Safety first mindset

Nice To Haves

Hydrogen safety and compressed gas handling experience
Experience with hydrogen isotopes
Experience with clean room protocols
Experience cleaning, handling, and storing components for clean room use or UHV use
Operational experience with metal hydride storage beds
Knowledge of the fusion fuel cycle

Responsibilities

Assembling equipment, sub-systems, instruments and data acquisition for a fusion fuel cycle development lab using UHV best practices
Planning, writing procedures, and performing experiments
Mentoring and teaching laboratory personnel how to operate UHV systems, compressed gas systems, and associated equipment safely
Manage laboratory equipment and consumables
Present experimental results to engineers and scientists
