About The Position

The Lead Lab Assistant is responsible for assisting and working cooperatively with the management team in managing the duties and activities of the work unit. This role facilitates workflow by performing a variety of clerical and processing duties, including inventory, filing, stocking, and rotating inventory. The position also involves training and continuing education of staff and requires a mature individual capable of maintaining confidentiality of employee concerns and issues. The Lead Lab Assistant performs pre-analytic specimen processing, operates laboratory and office equipment, enters information and test orders into the laboratory computer system, and may respond to a high volume of phone calls seeking laboratory testing information. This role ensures correct patient identification on specimens and documentation, and resolves pre-analytic specimen-related issues. It is an integral part of the laboratory team, providing support in patient testing. Duties may also include performing complex reagent preparation, managing work unit supply inventory, and operating automated systems. Individuals hired for this position are required to complete 2 years in this role before becoming eligible to transfer to other positions within Mayo Clinic.
