About The Position

Schwab Technology Services enables the future of how clients manage their money by delivering reliable, secure, and innovative technology products that support investing, financial planning, and retirement services. As a Lead Software Engineer, you will provide hands-on technical leadership for mission-critical retirement technology platforms that support millions of client transactions and retirement accounts. In this role, you will use Java, Technical Leadership, Systems Engineering, Microservices, Cloud Services Management, REST APIs, DevOps, and Developing Others to design scalable solutions, guide architecture decisions, modernize legacy platforms, strengthen operational stability, and mentor engineering teams. Your work will directly support Schwab’s ability to deliver secure, resilient, and high-quality technology solutions that help clients plan for and manage their financial futures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated enterprise application development experience using Java/J2EE and object-oriented engineering practices.
  • Ability to design, build, modernize, and support scalable Java applications using Microservices, REST APIs, and cloud-ready architecture patterns.
  • Demonstrated Technical Leadership through architecture guidance, design reviews, code reviews, mentoring, and cross-team technical influence.
  • Strong Systems Engineering experience designing secure, resilient, highly available solutions that support business-critical platforms.
  • Strong Experience with Spring Boot, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Splunk and cloud-based platforms.
  • Experience applying DevOps practices, CI/CD principles, production deployment discipline, and continuous improvement across the SDLC.
  • Experience with database technologies such as SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or equivalent relational database platforms.
  • Ability to partner effectively with product, architecture, cybersecurity, infrastructure, operations, and business stakeholders to translate requirements into secure and maintainable technology solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in financial services, retirement services, brokerage, banking, or another highly regulated industry.
  • Experience leading modernization initiatives, cloud migration, legacy platform transformation, or platform evolution efforts.
  • Experience with Docker, Grafana, Google Cloud, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, BDD, or TDD.
  • Experience developing event-driven or asynchronous applications on cloud platforms.
  • Experience establishing engineering standards, architecture governance practices, technical design patterns, and review processes.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools or modern software engineering practices to improve developer productivity and solution quality.
