Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) are the first point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers when they arrive at the training venue. They are responsible for checking them in, verifying weapons and credentials, conducting training, and overseeing the course of fire at the gun-range. They ensure the safety of all personnel on the range and secure SSI and SPII information during and after requalification sessions. LFIs are the on-site training manager for the program, conducting all classroom instruction, delivering approved TSA training and safety briefs, introducing new equipment, and ensuring students understand and sign the safety briefing. They ensure a minimum number of SFIs are present to maintain an instructor/student ratio of 1:6 and a sufficient inventory of training supplies. LFIs maintain positive control of the training environment, verify weapons and credentials upon arrival, ensure proper scoring, complete administrative forms, collect training data, and certify qualification scores. In case of FFDO failure to qualify, the LFI takes custody of the unloaded weapon, transport device, credential, and other equipment for return to TSA/FAMS, or makes immediate verbal notification to the FFDO Program Office. They must keep all Sensitive Security Information (SSI) and Sensitive Personally Identifying Information (SPII) secured appropriately in compliance with TSA policies. The LFI also oversees timekeeping of all SFI labor hours and must comply with internal compliance training events.
