Lead Firearms Instructors (LFIs) serve as the initial point of contact for Federal Flight Deck Officers (FFDOs) upon their arrival at the training venue. Their responsibilities include checking in FFDOs, verifying weapons and credentials, conducting training, and supervising the course of fire at the gun-range. LFIs are paramount in ensuring the safety of all personnel on the range and are tasked with securing Sensitive Security Information (SSI) and Sensitive Personally Identifying Information (SPII) during and after requalification sessions. As the on-site training manager, LFIs deliver all classroom instruction, including approved TSA training and safety briefs, introduce new equipment, and ensure all students comprehend and sign the safety briefing. They are responsible for maintaining an instructor/student ratio of 1:6 by ensuring a minimum number of SFIs are present and for having a sufficient inventory of training supplies. LFIs must maintain positive control of the training environment from student arrival to departure, visually verifying weapons and credentials. They oversee target scoring, completion of administrative forms, and data collection, and are required to sign and certify qualification scores. In cases where an FFDO fails to qualify and no authorized FAMS Representative is present, the LFI must take custody of the unloaded weapon, transport device, credential, and other equipment, making immediate verbal notification to the FFDO Program Office for return arrangements. Compliance with TSA MD 2100.2 and TSA MD 1400.3 regarding information security is mandatory. Additionally, LFIs oversee the timekeeping for all SFI labor hours and must comply with internal compliance training events.
