About The Position

This is a mid-career role within the Plant Instrumentation & Control Systems Design team, primarily focusing on boiling water reactor rod control systems and controls product development. The engineer will be responsible for supporting original equipment manufacturer (OEM) rod control systems in the operating fleet and designing rod control systems for new reactors. The scope of work includes requirements definition, design specifications, development of test and qualification plans, and field deployment of rod control systems, rod control blocking systems, and other controls systems and applications. The required work location is Wilmington, NC, with relocation assistance provided.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent 4-year technical degree.
  • 3 years’ experience with "from scratch" system and software design, configuration, analysis, testing, and modeling related to: Distributed Control Systems (DCS) OR Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) OR Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) OR Motor positioning/servo systems using closed loop controls.
  • 2 years' experience designing human machine interface screens or graphical user interfaces.
  • 3 years' experience working under a structured systems and software development lifecycle process, including the use of industry standards, design practices, and guides for software development and testing.
  • Eligibility to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information.

  • Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Computer Science or Technology, Mechatronics, or equivalent 4-year technical degree.
  • 4 years of experience with power generation or industrial controls systems NPI.
  • 4 years of experience in "from scratch" programmable logic controller (PLC) or other industrial platforms like the Siemens Simatic S7 PLC platform or the Stratus Fault-Tolerant Server.
  • 4 years experience in coding development on distributed control systems (DCS) software design including GE Mark-VIe DCS.
  • 3 years of experience developing human machine interfaces or graphical user interfaces.
  • 4 years of experience working with motor positioning/servo systems using closed loop control like the CntrlX Motor Controller or Safety PLC.
  • Clear thinker, detail oriented, insightful, quantitative, results oriented analyst and engineer – Able to make reasoned, sound, and timely decisions.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and writing.
  • Self-starter with energy and positive "Can-Do" attitude with legacy of delivering on commitments and stretch goals.
  • Team player with cross-discipline and functional leadership knowledge, skills, and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an understanding of rod control systems used in existing and new boiling water reactors (BWRs).
  • Review and implement systems based on requirements specifications derived from customer needs, technical regulations, and industry standards.
  • Prepare and maintain system design artifacts, including logic diagrams, I/O lists, equipment and cabinet layout diagrams, system elementary drawings, hardware wiring/connection diagrams, bills of material, and various plans and reports.
  • Perform and document technology assessment reports and/or trade studies to support the selection of hardware and software technologies for rod control systems.
  • Prepare high-level software design documents detailing software program architecture, inputs, transfer functions, algorithms, and outputs.
  • Perform hands-on development, configuration, and integration of prototype hardware and software for programmable logic controllers, industrial PCs, human-machine interfaces, and Distributed Control Systems.
  • Configure signal conditioning electronics, motor controllers, motors, and network components.
  • Prepare proof-of-concept test procedures based on system requirements and functional descriptions.
  • Perform and document the results of system proof-of-concept testing.
  • Develop and configure test equipment and simulators for software development and testing.
  • Support on-site system installation, acceptance, commissioning, and start-up testing.
  • Support the identification, assessment, resolution, and corrective/preventive actions for nonconformances and conditions adverse to quality.
  • Ensure compliance with GEH procedures/processes, nuclear regulations, applicable industry standards, and customer requirements.
