About The Position

This position is seeking a passionate and technically strong Lead Engineer to join Grid Strategy & Advancement (GSA) Engineering Application team. This position requires heavy technical expertise to serve as primary engineering liaison between Duke Energy and large load data center customers. The role manages in-depth technical communications and evaluations regarding system stability, EMT, protection, and power quality. Blending the engineering expertise with practical project management experience, this position oversees external engineering consultants, navigates complex regulatory frameworks, and is essential for translating complex technical details during customer communications while managing ad-hoc engineering deliverables. The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work, and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • 8 years related work experience
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship, now or in the future.

  • Expert-level understanding of engineering theories and principles related to large load integration, interconnection policies, and power distribution
  • Demonstrated knowledge of power electronics-interfaced devices and their grid interconnection, including system topology, equipment configuration, control settings and expected grid performance
  • Extensive experience in electrical facility designs or conducting detailed technical reviews of complex customer facility designs and equipment specifications
  • Experience navigating Interconnection Process, Queue Management, and NERC standards
  • Demonstrated leadership in managing external engineering consultants and leading technical standard committees
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex engineering concepts to diverse internal and external audiences (internal teams, customers, regulators)

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the primary engineering liaison for large load data center customers, managing in-depth technical communications and translating complex technical details.
  • Interprets, evaluates, and clearly explains complex engineering study results related to system stability, EMT (Electromagnetic Transients), protection, and power quality to internal stakeholders and external customers.
  • Leads the development and full-lifecycle compliance verification of the Technical Interconnection Requirements for Large Load (TIRLL).
  • Leads the internal Large Load Technical Standard Committee (LLTSC) and ensures the integration of NERC standards and industry best practices.
  • Navigates complex regulatory and engineering frameworks, such as the large load interconnection process and queue management.
  • Oversees external engineering consultants and manages ad-hoc engineering deliverables.
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Maintains accurate records and files.
