About The Position

As an Engineer in DC&I, you will help drive National Grid’s ESMP-aligned Grid Modernization initiatives. You’ll participate in the specification, design, and implementation of advanced grid technologies, with a special emphasis on Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS), DER Gateway solutions, Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO), and other intelligent grid applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science from an accredited institution.
  • 7 or more years of related technical experience.
  • Ability to innovate in planning and operating electric supply/distribution systems using advanced analytics and emerging technologies.
  • Knowledge of control system technologies, programming, configuration, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills; able to present technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours and travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Support the deployment, integration, and maintenance of DERMS platforms and DER Gateway solutions, enabling secure, scalable, and interoperable management and control of distributed energy resources.
  • Develop, validate, and optimize Volt/VAR Optimization (VVO) and Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) schemes to improve grid efficiency and reliability.
  • Evaluate new technologies, participate in equipment specification and selection, and perform end-to-end solution design, including validation and testing of advanced control systems.
  • Advance automation systems (e.g., FLISR, fault location, auto-transfer, advanced protection schemes), program automation platforms, and integrate devices such as RTUs, reclosers, voltage regulators, and data concentrators.
  • Support design, integration, and optimization of field area network communications using serial and ethernet-based devices.
  • Work closely with SCADA/EMS teams to integrate control systems and technologies into applications for system operators and engineers.
  • Contribute to project planning and delivery of intelligent grid tools in line with ESMP vision, standards, and policies. Build relationships with industry peers to stay current on technical innovations.
  • Develop and implement methods to leverage new energy resources and demand response systems for day-to-day business operations.
