About The Position

Formlabs is building tools that enable anyone to bring ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Their 3D printing technology is used by over 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. The company is composed of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators focused on reinventing how physical things are made. This role is for an Embedded Engineering Manager who will lead the embedded software team responsible for firmware development across microcontrollers and embedded Linux. This firmware is critical for Formlabs printers, running on over 130,000 devices globally. The platform developed by this team will influence the development and performance of new printers being added in the coming years.

Requirements

  • Experience leading a team of embedded or firmware engineers, including hiring and performance management.
  • Experience taking multiple products from prototype to volume production and supporting them post-launch.
  • Proficiency working with both bare-metal microcontrollers and embedded Linux, and multicore processors.
  • Experience using Python for tooling and testing.
  • Experience bringing up boards and peripherals (ADC, PWM, SPI, I2C, CAN, Ethernet).
  • Ability to read schematics.
  • Proficiency in debugging with an oscilloscope and logic analyzer.
  • Ability to profile and optimize firmware for performance, memory, and power consumption.
  • Skill in diagnosing problems across multiple connected controllers using logs and trace data.

  • Clear communication skills with electrical, mechanical, and software engineers, as well as product and program leads.

Nice To Haves

  • Linux kernel experience, including writing device drivers.
  • Firmware experience with motion control, lasers or optics, or thermal systems.
  • Experience with over-the-air (OTA) updates and device security for connected products.
  • Experience supporting a large fleet of connected devices in the field.
  • Familiarity with MISRA C or other safety-critical coding standards.
  • Passion for and experience in 3D printing.
  • Background in electronics or robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Own the delivery of embedded firmware for current and upcoming printers, ensuring program milestones are met, setting quality standards, and making decisions about what features to ship.
  • Remain hands-on by reviewing architecture and code, debugging on target hardware alongside engineers, and contributing code when necessary.
  • Set the direction for a shared embedded platform, including drivers, communication stacks, RTOS and embedded Linux integration, bootloaders, firmware updates, and build infrastructure, to promote reuse across new printer models.
  • Hire and coach embedded engineers, manage their performance, and address any performance issues proactively.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineering, systems integration, mechanical, and software teams throughout the product lifecycle, from board bring-up to production, and investigate field failures to identify root causes.
  • Develop test automation, CI, and static analysis tools to enable the team to ship firmware updates to a large installed base without causing issues.
  • Critically evaluate requirements and prioritize work that delivers customer value, ensuring the team focuses on the most impactful tasks.
