Lead Electrical Engineer (ACS)

WSP•Seattle, WA

About The Position

WSP USA is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer for its Power & Energy Advanced Complementary Services (ACS) team in the Seattle, Washington, or New York, New York office. The role supports grid-connected electrification, behind-the-meter energy systems, and power solutions across utility, industrial, and commercial projects. It provides high-level technical guidance across project due diligence, investigation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction, including transmission and distribution substations, power distribution and regulation, renewable energy, and protection and control systems. The engineer will lead electrical design for behind-the-meter systems, primarily charging and electrification infrastructure, and guide utility coordination, power system studies, equipment specifications, and multi-discipline project delivery. The role also supports renewable energy and decarbonization projects, provides technical mentorship and QA/QC, and collaborates with clients, utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, contractors, and other project partners. Work must meet or exceed applicable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality, and comply with WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead preparation and review of IFC electrical design documents for behind-the-meter systems from 35 kV through medium- and low-voltage distribution and device-level design, focusing primarily on charging and electrification infrastructure.
  • Conduct site visits and field assessments of existing electrical infrastructure, capacity, constructability, and code compliance; document findings and develop engineering recommendations.
  • Lead utility coordination, including service applications, interconnection requirements, utility standards compliance, and coordination with utility protection and metering teams.
  • Design and review medium-voltage switchgear and substations, power distribution, lighting and controls, grounding and bonding, and lightning protection systems.
  • Develop and review equipment specifications, data sheets, and procurement packages for major electrical equipment.
  • Perform or review load studies, equipment sizing, short-circuit and arc-flash studies, protective device coordination, and grounding touch- and step-voltage analyses.
  • Prepare and review power system studies using ETAP, SKM, or equivalent software, providing technical oversight of modeling assumptions, results, and reports.
  • Support renewable energy and decarbonization projects, including integration of photovoltaic systems and battery energy storage systems into behind-the-meter electrical architectures.
  • Provide technical mentorship, oversight, and quality assurance/quality control for junior engineers and designers.
  • Use AutoCAD Electrical and Revit to support coordinated, model-based, multi-discipline designs.
  • Perform lighting design and analysis using AGi32.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand electrification and decarbonization goals, operational needs, phasing strategies, and technical constraints.
  • Coordinate with engineering disciplines, subconsultants, utilities, authorities having jurisdiction, and contractors throughout design, permitting, and construction.
  • Prepare technical assessments, reports, calculations, and presentations for client, utility, and regulatory review.
  • Stay current with electrical codes, standards, and best practices related to power systems, electrification, and decarbonization.
