About The Position

L3Harris is seeking a Lead Antenna Design Engineer to lead and manage the design of ultrawideband antenna and electronically scanned array (ESA) systems across various lifecycle phases for their Advanced Aperture Solution group. The Lead Antenna Designer will be responsible for meeting project targets, performing engineering tasks, and leading engineering activities across multiple disciplines. This role involves interacting with customers to determine needs/requirements, guiding architecture design, and leading multiple programs to ensure technical requirements are met or exceeded. Effective communication skills and the ability to present complex solutions to diverse audiences are required. The Advanced Aperture Solutions (AAS) group, based in Rockwall, TX, is a quick reaction capability (QRC) aperture solutions business responsible for the design and development of high-gain antenna systems for military airborne, maritime, and ground platforms. The team utilizes State-of-the-Art design tools including CST Design Studio Antenna Modeling Software, Circuit Board design software, MATLAB software, SolidWorks software, and a PCB Laser for rapid prototyping, ultimately providing critical ISR capabilities in the SIGINT operating environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelors in engineering or other related field with 9 years of related experience. Graduate degree and a minimum of 7 years of related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
  • Position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
  • Experience with design and analysis of antenna performance (gain, bandwidth, polarization, directivity, efficiency, etc.), RF Link Budgets and cascade analysis (gain, noise figure, linearity, noise power, etc.), S-parameters, matching networks, filtering (bandwidth, types, implementations, etc.).
  • Antenna design experience for electromagnetics in the RF spectrum, including VHF, UHF, and microwave applications in the L, S, C, X, Ku, Ka, and V bands.
  • Experience with antenna element design including horns, dipoles, patch, PIFAs, loop, slot, helical, fractal, Vivaldi, Biconical, Log-periodic, Yagi, etc.
  • Experience with antenna simulation and analysis tools including HFSS, CST, SystemVue, Advanced Design System (ADS), MATLAB, and other ECAD design tools.

Nice To Haves

  • Phased array design experience preferred.
  • Antenna Range measurement techniques utilizing Planar Near Field Scanners, Spherical Near Field Scanners, Compact Ranges, Far Field Ranges, etc.
  • Familiarity with RF technologies (e.g., radar, communication, cellular, WiFi, SATCOM).
  • Advanced user of antenna and RF lab equipment (Vector Network Analyzers, Spectrum Analyzers, Signal Generators, Noise Figure Meters, Power Sensors, etc).
  • An understanding of programming languages (MATLAB, C/C++, LabVIEW, Qt, Python).
  • Experience with wiring/block diagrams, mechanical drawings, and PCB schematic/layout drawings.
  • Familiarity with direction finding (DF) systems, and digital beamforming.
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex antenna and RF/Microwave development including research, detailed design, and analysis for airborne, maritime, and ground systems.
  • Prepare and conduct technical design review briefings.
  • Assess and report on technical project status, risks, and issues.
  • Oversee product development, technical activities, and system integration to ensure designs meet customer requirements.
  • Perform RF front end level requirements, design, test, and integration of antenna systems for various platforms.
  • Collaborate with design teams, test, production, program management, and customers to execute systems and deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Support business development activities including planning, customer visits, technical briefings, and customer demonstrations.
  • Draw on internal resources to generate accurate estimates for NRE and recurring costs.
  • Make decisions on high-level/high-impact technical issues.
  • Write and release system specifications, test procedures, and qualification reports.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment, focusing on problem resolution and process improvement.
  • Interface with customers on technical and contractual matters, ensuring satisfaction and business growth.
  • Ability to travel up to 10%.
