About The Position

This role involves leading the design of high-voltage transmission lines, serving as a subject matter expert in specific voltage ranges, and mentoring junior team members. The engineer will coordinate design activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and client requirements, and prepare technical reports and studies. A key aspect of the role is performing independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations, drawings, and transmission line models using PLS-CADD. The position adheres to Sargent & Lundy's System of Processes. This role offers a hybrid work arrangement, with three days expected in the office and two days remote. A relocation package is available depending on location.

Requirements

  • BS degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program.
  • 12 years of transmission design experience.
  • 3 or more years of experience in 500kV and/or 765kV transmission line design.
  • Familiarity with the electrical considerations for 765kV transmission lines.
  • Proficiency with PLS-CADD software.
  • Experience must include preparation of scopes of work, development of conceptual designs, determination of design basis, the selection of equipment and materials, and the preparation and assembling of calculations and specifications.
  • Experience working directly with clients on transmission lines from 69kV through 765kV.
  • Knowledge of engineering standards including NESC, IEC, ASCE, ACI, IEEE and ANSI.
  • Experience reviewing design drawings created by others.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of transmission lines in the 69kV to 765kV range.
  • Serve as a subject matter specialist in 500kV and 765kV transmission lines.
  • Mentor and train less experienced design team members.
  • Coordinate design activities to ensure installation and operations will comply with specifications, codes, and client requirements.
  • Prepare reports and studies that present technical information in a clear and concise manner and meet client requirements and S&L formats.
  • Perform independent reviews of work performed by others including calculations, drawing preparation, and transmission line models based in PLS-CADD.
  • Adhere to Sargent & Lundy's System of Processes.
  • Lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs.
  • Direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation and guiding when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked.
  • Oversee engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs.
