About The Position

Under the supervision of the charge nurse and/or physician, administers care for patients of all age groups, with both acute and chronic health problems. The ED Tech Lead provides direct patient care that encompasses the nursing assistant role, unit secretary role, phlebotomy and 12-lead ECG tracings. Serves as a resource to other technicians, trains new technicians, and resolves scheduling needs and payroll for ED technicians. Responsible for restraint audits. Will do primary ordering for supplies needed within the ED. Mentoring and assisting peers to perform more efficiently and raise performance.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA)
  • H.S. Diploma/GED
  • Tech within the emergency department

Responsibilities

  • Precepts and trains new ED technicians
  • Prepares orientation and training materials and yearly competency education for ED technicians
  • Serves as a resource of knowledge and shares knowledge as appropriate.
  • Orders supplies for departmental needs
  • Reviews charts for restraint audits
  • Participates in unit committees
  • Adheres to all policies and procedures
  • Applies protective devices correctly
  • Anticipates patient request, makes rounds every hour as a minimum
  • Assists RN in planning patient care
  • Maintains a safe unit environment
  • Washes hands before and after patient contact
  • Handles soiled linen, equipment and instruments per protocol
  • Maintains sterile asepsis
  • Changes and secures dressings
  • Maintains isolation technique
  • Utilizes p.p.e. appropriately
  • Keeps hallways clear of furniture/equipment, everything on one side
  • Orders department supplies as Lawson requester
  • Maintains support areas (kitchen, nurses station, utility rooms) clean/stocked
  • Restocks equipment in patient rooms
  • Accountable for wheelchairs, thermometers and other pertinent equipment
  • Completes appropriate work form for maintenance and clinical engineering service, equipment work orders, including removing from service
  • Provides direct patient care that demonstrates our mission and values.
  • Performs and documents selected diagnostic tests – phlebotomy & 12-lead ECG recording
  • Performs lab testing as appropriate
  • Provides and documents fluid management per policy - peripheral IV site care, observe, measure, report IV flow rate, remove peripheral IV catheters
  • Provides care for the patient requiring restraint or seclusion
  • Performs splint application
  • Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing.
  • Performs patient bedside lab testing and associated quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and hospital lab procedures/policies.
  • Responsible for knowing and following the EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) Federal Regulations.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding and working knowledge of all equipment necessary to perform job functions.
  • Performs and documents special procedures per policy: application of heat/cold, decubitus care, pelvic exam setup, I & D setup, surgical skin prep, apply ace/TEDS/binders, apply/remove leads, assist coughing & deep breathing, assist with physical exam, oral suctioning, nasopharyngeal suctioning, trache care (>72 hrs), maintain and clean suction equipment, application of hypo/hyperthermia unit, care of oxygen equipment, room set-up for trauma, suture set-up, moderate sedation set-up, patient prep for any procedure
  • Demonstrates a practical problem solving approach to patient moving and handling issues.
  • Demonstrates skills to promote patient and staff safety through appropriate use of lift equipment.
  • Maintains a pleasant environment for patients by keeping rooms visually clean and uncluttered
  • Ready to monitor patient post-procedure
  • Participates in admission, transport and discharge of patients
  • Assist patients with -in-bed mobility; transfers to/from bed, WC, stretcher, or chair; positioning for alignment and comfort
  • Prepares patients for meals by offering washing of hands, mouth care and positioning in chair or bed before meal tray arrives
  • Delivers trays within 5 min of arrival
  • Documents intake per policy
  • Feeds dependent patients as needed
  • Provides fresh water, ice and snacks.
  • Offers/removes bedpans and urinals
  • Provides catheter care per policy
  • Removes foley catheters
  • Applies condom catheters
  • Empty urinary drainage bags using goggles and gloves
  • Collect specimens for ordered tests
  • Insert rectal tube
  • Catheterize female and male patients
  • Provides ostomy care
  • Breakup/remove fecal impaction
  • Communicates any intake and output imbalance exceeding 100 mL to the Lead RN and the patient caregiver.
  • Coaches and mentors staff.
