The purpose of this position is to maintain the Company fleet in accordance with established schedules and all government regulations. This role directs the activities of other hourly diesel mechanics, ensuring they follow company policies and perform duties as instructed. The Lead Diesel Mechanic works with the supervisor to provide updates on shop progress and production, while also performing other diesel mechanic duties. This includes tire work, light maintenance on fleet vehicles (lights, mud flaps, minor wiring, hoses, belts), rewiring trucks, trailers, and loaders. The role involves reading hydraulic pressure gauges, replacing components, troubleshooting, and performing necessary repairs. Basic welding is required, along with the ability to identify all tools and parts needed for Company vehicles. A strong understanding of refrigeration systems, including suction and discharge pressures, charge units, and components, is necessary, as is the ability to find and repair freon leaks. The position also involves diagnosing and repairing various company equipment such as forklifts, trailers, and pickup trucks. Participation as a team member is crucial, involving ongoing development, communication, and implementation of team concepts, programs, and policies. This includes coordinating work for best practices, attending team meetings, fostering cohesiveness, and taking responsibility for identifying and resolving issues. Familiarity with Simmons’ operating systems (quality, security, office environment, company policies) and understanding the role in supporting these systems is required, including communicating concerns and improvement ideas.
