Lead Developer

Avis Budget GroupParsippany-Troy Hills, NJ
$130,000 - $145,000Onsite

About The Position

Avis Budget Group's Contact Center Engineering team is modernising IVR, deploying AI-driven deflection, and building the integration fabric connecting customer interactions across voice and digital channels globally. The Lead Developer is the technical anchor of this squad — owning delivery from design to production, making architectural calls, and actively developing the engineers around you. This is a hands-on IC role with a defined path to Engineering Manager over a 24 to 36 month horizon for the right candidate.

Requirements

  • 10 to 12 years of software engineering experience, with a meaningful portion in hands-on lead or principal IC roles.
  • 3+ years of production experience with Amazon Connect — contact flows, IVR design, and enterprise-scale omnichannel integration.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Node.js and TypeScript; strong command of the JavaScript ecosystem end-to-end.
  • Hands-on AWS depth: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, IAM, EC2 — production ownership, not just familiarity.
  • Solid microservices and API design background; experienced with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD tooling (CDK, ArgoCD, or equivalent).
  • Active user of AI-assisted coding tools with a track record of meaningfully integrating them into engineering delivery.
  • Experience with WebRTC, VoIP, or telephony integration protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical delivery end-to-end — scoping, estimating, driving to milestones — not just executing tasks assigned by others.
  • Track record of mentoring engineers and raising engineering standards; comfortable driving clarity in ambiguous environments with strong communication across technical and business audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot in a production microservices context.
  • Exposure to Amazon Bedrock, Nova Sonic, or Claude for building AI agents or voice AI capabilities.
  • Familiarity with agentic AI patterns: tool-use, multi-agent orchestration, prompt engineering, and LLM evaluation.
  • Background in security best practices: IAM policy design, secrets management, and secure coding standards.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver production-grade solutions on Amazon Connect — contact flows, IVR, omnichannel routing — and own the AWS integration layer (Lambda, DynamoDB, S3, API Gateway, IAM).
  • Lead integration of AI capabilities into contact flows: Amazon Lex for NLU, Amazon Bedrock and Nova Sonic for voice AI; contribute to IVR modernisation using hybrid cloud bridging for legacy telephony infrastructure.
  • Build and own scalable backend services in Node.js/TypeScript; design clean, well-tested microservices with strong API patterns, resiliency, and performance discipline — hands-on with Docker, Kubernetes, and serverless where appropriate.
  • Own data layer decisions across relational (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL (DynamoDB) stores; integrate third-party communication platforms including WebRTC and VoIP where required.
  • Actively use AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or equivalent) as a standard part of your development workflow — not occasionally, but as a force multiplier.
  • Contribute to the team's adoption of AI tooling; help establish patterns for responsible, effective use of generative AI in engineering delivery.
  • Drive cloud-native AWS delivery — well-architected and secure across EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, and related services; build and maintain CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure-as-Code using AWS CDK.
  • Implement full observability — metrics, tracing, alerting, SLO dashboards using Dynatrace, Grafana, and CloudWatch; own incident learnings, not just incident response.
  • Lead design reviews, code reviews, and architectural discussions; set the technical standard and hold the team to it.
  • Mentor engineers through pairing and structured feedback; your impact should be visible in how the team around you improves.
  • Translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical direction and communicate trade-offs across engineering and business stakeholders; drive technical debt reduction as a first-class delivery concern.
