Requirements

  • Expert knowledge of C/POSIX and object-oriented design principles; owns technical initiatives and defines architecture for complex systems.
  • Proficient in using Real time operating system and/or multi threaded Linux environment for Embedded software development.
  • Proven multi-year experience working on preemptive, multitasking real-time operating systems or multi-service, multi-threaded Embedded Linux systems.
  • Strong experience using data structures, algorithms, and design patterns common to embedded (resource-constrained) systems development, object oriented design principles.
  • Proven experience in hands-on development and troubleshooting hard to debug issues for embedded targets.
  • Strong knowledge of RTOS and Linux including embedded Linux architecture (Kernel, Init systems, bootloaders, Services infrastructure, etc…)
  • Good understanding of Microcontroller Design and utilization.
  • Proven understanding of underlying electronics to the point where it influences firmware development and debugging.
  • Proven Understanding of basic communication protocols common in embedded systems (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C, CAN).
  • Experience and knowledge for reading schematics and data sheets for components.
  • Mastery of commonly used architectures (ARM, RISC-V) and SoCs (STM32, NXP, Renesas).
  • Proficient in one or more scripting languages (Python, Bash) and test frameworks (Pytest, Robot Framework) with experience in SQL.
  • Proficiency in Git (or similar source control tool).
  • Experienced with CI/CD methods and build systems to manage and evolve products throughout their lifecycle.
  • Technical competence using software programs, including, but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
  • Provides advanced technical mentorship and takes ownership of the quality and deliverables of developers within the team.
  • Strong ability to solve open-ended design problems and provide well-judged data driven recommendations based on research.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Highly organized, meticulous, high attention to details with experience balancing multiple tasks in an agile environment with dynamic priorities.
  • Strong team-player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical systems and decisions effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experienced working in Scrum/Agile development environment.
  • Ability to adapt well to the shifting requirements and priorities in a dynamic working environment.
  • Entrepreneurial and comfortable working in a flat organizational structure.
  • Post-secondary Diploma/Degree with specialization in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within a technical or engineering organization, with knowledge of the high-technology/telematics industry is an asset.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience in related field may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical initiatives and define the architecture for complex embedded systems.
  • Architect and validate firmware from requirements to production.
  • Lead technical projects across the team's roadmap.
  • Provide advanced mentorship and quality assurance through peer reviews to maintain high-throughput delivery.
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the Geotab IoT devices (such as telematics devices, extendibility products, asset trackers, Video products) firmware and how various modules work.
  • Advocate for modular, reusable, hardware independent software/firmware development practices and adhere to test driven development principles.
  • Identify key areas of architecture improvement and contribute to the team roadmap.
  • Take ownership of technical initiatives, projects and products, and contribute to their implementation and output.
  • Contribute to defining strategic direction, planning the roadmap, and synthesizing feedback to ensure team success.
  • Break down large engineering efforts into smaller pieces that can be completed in parallel in collaboration with the team.
  • Develop and review scalable, high quality, secure embedded software using Geotab's development standards for RTOS, Embedded Linux or baremetal.
  • Proficient in large scale feature functionality analysis, device health analysis, using various tools like GBQ/SQL and Geotab datasets.
  • Work with the team lead/manager to set the direction of the team and guide key stakeholders on execution choices and trade-offs.
  • Advise managers with insights and recommendations to improve the team.
  • Define unit test, integration test, simulated or hardware test frameworks to facilitate test driven development.
  • Provide and Maintain design documents and other documentation to ensure efficient maintenance and code reuse.
  • Perform quality assurance through peer review; ensuring test coverage, enforcing coding standards, identifying potential bugs and aligning with requirements.
  • Provide technical mentorship to other developers, take ownership of quality and deliverable of the work of developers in the team.
