About The Position

Cox Automotive is seeking a Lead Detail Technician to lead the detailing team in daily operations, ensuring vehicles meet company quality standards and deadlines. This role involves collaborating with the Detail Supervisor to coordinate workflow, assign tasks, and support team performance. The Lead Detail Technician will maintain quality control by inspecting completed work, providing coaching, and rejecting vehicles not meeting standards. This position also ensures employees have proper equipment and training, maintains a safe work environment by enforcing safety procedures and complying with OSHA requirements, and assists with inventory tracking and supply ordering. Effective communication with internal departments is crucial for smooth vehicle flow, and contributions to improving efficiency and productivity within the detail department are expected. The role also includes ensuring work areas are cleaned and supporting others in navigating change. Overtime may be required.

Requirements

  • Minimum: High school diploma/GED and 7 years’ experience. OR the right candidate could also have a different combination, such as any level degree/certification beyond a HS diploma/GED in a related discipline and 5 years’ experience; OR 9 years’ experience in a related field.
  • Safe drivers needed; valid driver’s license required.
  • Competent leadership and excellent organizational skills required.
  • Good computer software knowledge.
  • Ability to work well with others and maintain focus and productivity under compressed deadlines.
  • Commitment to providing excellent customer service is essential.
  • Strong communication and interaction skills are required.
  • Ability to lift 1-30 pounds (light hand tools, etc.)
  • Manual dexterity, repetitive motion tasks.
  • Vision abilities required include close, distance and color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, talk, and hear.
  • Required to stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, squat, and climb.
  • Must clear a pre-employment drug test.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the detailing team in daily operations, ensuring vehicles meet company quality standards and deadlines.
  • Collaborate with the Detail Supervisor to coordinate workflow, assign tasks, and support team performance.
  • Maintain quality control by inspecting completed work and providing coaching or guidance as needed.
  • Reject Vehicles not meeting standards and return to detail shop for redo.
  • Generate appropriate reports and re-inspect problem vehicles to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Ensure employees have proper equipment and are properly trained in its use.
  • Provide and maintain a safe work environment by explaining, monitoring, and enforcing required Auction safety procedures and complying with the OSHA requirements.
  • Ensure proper use of chemicals, equipment, and safety procedures within the department.
  • Assist with inventory tracking and supply ordering for detailing materials.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments (e.g., recon, mechanical, body shop) to support smooth vehicle flow.
  • Contribute operational insights to improve efficiency and productivity within the detail department.
  • Ensure washing bays and other work areas are cleaned at the end of the workday and/or throughout if necessary.
  • Anticipate future changes and make contingency plans.
  • Supports others in embracing and effectively navigating change.
  • May be required to work overtime (more than 40 hours per week).
