We have an opening for a Lead Design Engineer (LDE) for the LLNL Advanced Sources and Detectors (ASD) Scorpius team. ASD Scorpius is a Major Item of Equipment (MIE) being designed and procured on behalf of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) by the major NNSA laboratories and sites. It is a flash x-ray radiographic capability that will provide essential information in support of stockpile stewardship. The LDE reports programmatically to the ASD Project Office at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The LDE is a senior level mechanical engineer who is the primary point of contact at each site for design scope and design decisions at that site. Any proposed design changes to subsystems owned by that site are adjudicated by the LDE. The LDE is responsible for interfacing with the project office and partner labs/sites on design decisions. You will provide and/or oversee mechanical engineering functions including design, analysis, fabrication and testing during deployment for new systems and upgrades to existing hardware. Your work will also involve project management, interacting with all stakeholders to ensure successful project completion and providing leadership and mentoring to junior engineers. This position is in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED) within the Engineering Directorate. This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work. This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
