About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Lead Data Center Operations Specialist to join their 24x7 IT Operations Center in Nashville, Tennessee. This role serves as the primary point of contact during scheduled shifts, responsible for training team members, ensuring efficient work completion, and coordinating all Moves, Adds, and Changes (MACs) within the Data Center. The specialist will maintain optimal operating conditions for all IT processing and network equipment to ensure 100% system uptime, manage data integrity of all assets, and perform these duties under the guidance of Operations Supervisors and/or the Operations Manager. The position involves coaching and mentoring peers to maintain operational effectiveness and readiness, ensuring customer needs are met, and identifying areas for improvement.

Requirements

  • Physically assist in moving and racking equipment
  • Able to safely lift and move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to update asset management data as required
  • On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed.
  • Effectively utilize the ticket management system to communicate, collaborate, and execute work & projects.
  • Able to Install/Uninstall/Maintain data center devices (servers, switches, storage and other hardware)
  • Able to cable systems (power/copper/fiber/other) correctly based on ticket requirements and SOP standards
  • Communicates effectively and professionally in tickets, emails, telephone conversations, and in-person interactions with customers, management, and peers
  • Must work effectively with other staff and customers
  • Must be able to multi-task
  • Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, conditions, and circumstances
  • Must be punctual and reliable
  • Must have good organization skills

  • May be required to operate material handling equipment – server lifts.
  • Proficiency working with standard desktop PC tools and applications such as MS Office, MS Outlook, web browsers, etc.
  • Server/Network Hardware Rack and Stack experience
  • Experience working with ticketing systems.
  • Working knowledge of computer hardware
  • Working knowledge of networking components and infrastructures
  • Knowledgeable in Data Center best practices
  • Strong cable management skills and experience running fiber and copper in a data center
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1 year of relevant work experience

  • Certifications in Data Center technologies are desired.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and coordinate MACs (Moves/Adds/Changes) for data center devices, infrastructure, and cabling while adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Program Policies, Safety Policies, and Security Policies.
  • Prioritize workloads, communicate roadblocks, and collaborate in alignment with VUMC and the Data Center's mission.
  • Lead scheduled shifts and collaborate with other leads to ensure daily operations align with organizational needs and priorities.
  • Ensure customer needs are met and identify issues and areas for improvement.
  • Provide On-Call, Vacation, and Sick Coverage as needed.
  • Coach and mentor team members on continuous improvements, processes, job functions, and resolution skills.
  • Maintain overall site readiness and cleanliness.
  • Create, manage, and maintain thorough documentation of IT assets, chain of custody, and shipments.
  • Track, audit, and update data center & IT assets within Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) software.
  • Monitor all data center critical facility systems: fire suppression, water infiltration, air cooling, and power.
  • Collaborate with internal and external parties to assist in critical facility system incident response.
  • Facilitate communications and notifications during major incidents (critical application outages).
  • Other duties as assigned.
