About The Position

The American Medical Association (AMA) is seeking a Lead Data Analyst for its Health Policy team. This hybrid position, based in Chicago, IL, requires three days a week in the office. The role involves developing and maintaining critical data resources to enhance the AMA/Specialty Society RVS Update Committee (RUC) process and submissions to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The Lead Data Analyst will conduct claims and other data analysis to ensure accuracy in the Medicare payment system and support AMA advocacy goals.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required (P2+/M2+).
  • 7+ years of experience in healthcare data analytics, preferably working with physicians, professional associations, and/or government agencies.
  • Expert knowledge in healthcare claims data analysis.
  • Expert knowledge and experience with Stata, SAS, and SQL.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate and deliver effective presentations and successfully interact with physicians and policymakers.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, including the ability to independently and efficiently locate information, evaluate and concisely present findings.
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to independently initiate, manage, and execute multiple policy projects in a fast-paced team environment under tight deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-focused environment.
  • Organizational sensitivity and a sense of confidentiality and discretion required.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Access required.
  • Some travel required, including overnight and weekend meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex data analysis of Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Medicaid claims data for the CPT Editorial Panel and RUC processes.
  • Utilize claims data and other sources to support AMA Advocacy staff in addressing proposed regulations and legislation.
  • Provide data analysis to the RUC and RUC Subcommittees to inform methodology considerations.
  • Perform utilization projections and budget neutrality assumptions through liaison with specialty societies for submission to CMS.
  • Collaborate with Advocacy staff in physician payment advocacy and discussions with CMS, MedPAC, legislative staff, and other organizations by providing data analysis.
  • Write, edit, and oversee the development of reports and educational materials related to claims analysis.
  • Maintain all data obtained from national medical specialty society surveys and reported on summary of recommendation macro-based documents.
  • Prepare and manage data reports for CMS for submission with RUC recommendations related to resource costs.
  • Manage the integrity of the RUC data retention process.
  • Manage an extensive and complex database tool of RUC and RBRVS information for individual physician services.
  • Collaborate with AMA Information Technology to ensure the successful deployment of updates to the RUC Database and the RBRVS Data Management system.
  • Ensure successful utilization of the RUC Database by providing orientation sessions and addressing questions for the RUC, CPT Editorial Panel, CMS staff, and others.
  • Contribute to the development of advocacy documents, including RUC recommendations, presentations, graphics, correspondence, and other reports related to physician payment policy.
  • Analyze claims data, Medicare payments, and other data to develop persuasive arguments for presentation to CMS, MedPAC, and other organizations to advocate for physicians' interests.
  • Prepare data files for use in AMA products, including clinical vignettes and CPT/RVU products.
  • Participate in annual RUC meetings, facilitating the use of the RUC Database tool and providing data and budget neutrality analysis support to RUC members and national medical specialty societies for developing RUC recommendations.
  • May include other responsibilities as assigned.
