About The Position

The Custodian Lead directs the Arena Conversion Team while converting the building from one type of event to another, an example can be a hockey game to a concert. The Lead also ensures the cleanliness, maintenance, and operational readiness of the RiverCentre, Roy Wilkins Auditorium, Grand Casino Arena, 317 on Rice Park and TRIA Rink practice facility. This position supports event operations by overseeing custodial functions, coordinating event setup and teardown, and maintaining facility standards in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The Lead Custodian provides supervision and guidance to operations staff: Full-Time Custodians, Part-Time Casual Labor and Contracted Staff, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards. Additional duties include maintaining/ repairing equipment such as the portable risers, seats and decking.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent certification preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License required
  • Bilingual Spanish/English proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Membership in I.U.O.E. Local 70 or willing to become a member within 30 days of hire.
  • Knowledge of arena events and the process of converting from one event to another is preferred
  • Knowledge of general facility cleaning needs and procedures.
  • Knowledge of general building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and supplies commonly used in building cleaning and maintenance.
  • Experience in facilities operations in an arena or convention center environment
  • Experience in leading/supervising a diverse work group.
  • Experience operating cleaning equipment, including vacuums, riding scrubbers, and sweepers.
  • Experience operating mechanical maintenance equipment: sweepers/buffers/scrubbers.
  • Experience operating forklifts, scissor lifts, and bobcats preferred or the willingness to learn
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and facility presentation.
  • Exhibits excellent communication skills, both verbal and electronic, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and with external partners.
  • Self-motivated and dependable, with the ability to work extended hours independently and manage shifting priorities.
  • Maintains a professional and courteous demeanor when interacting with the public, clients, and team members.
  • Proven leadership capabilities, including the ability to guide, motivate, and support a diverse team in high-pressure or time-sensitive situations.

  • Able to coordinate and indirectly supervise large teams, with experience overseeing up to 100 staff members during peak operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead a crew in general conversion, custodial, and building maintenance duties.
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings to communicate the day’s objectives, i.e. cleaning, conversions, projects.
  • Lead a crew in completing arena conversion and other set-up, cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain accurate time reports on work performed and sign employees in and out for payroll purposes.
  • Measure and mark event spaces for equipment based on diagrams provided in event orders.
  • Respond to conversion, cleaning and maintenance calls during events.
  • Operate and train staff to operate cleaning equipment: riding sweepers/scrubbers, walk behind sweepers and scrubbers, escalator and carpet cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Operate a forklift, Bobcat, aerial lifts and other motorized equipment.
  • Assist with detailed cleaning projects, including high dusting, floor waxing and seat cleaning
  • Work in a team-oriented environment with other full-time, casual labor and contract staff.
  • Perform tasks to make sure the complex is in top condition for day-to-day operations.
  • Set up and tear down hockey glass, retractable risers, dasher boards, and ice deck.
  • Clean carpets with vacuums and carpet-cleaning equipment.
  • Wash windows and doors, empty trash, and operate compactors.
  • Separate all waste: compost, comingle, mixed paper, construction waste, trash and empty it into the corresponding receptacle.
  • Assist in outside maintenance: shovel snow, pull weeds, pressure wash sidewalks, etc.
  • Assist in unloading and moving freight.
  • Communicate, educate, and train all other departmental staff on the building’s sustainability policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
