About The Position

The Lead Coating Technician operates thin film coating and test equipment, retrieves designs, programs systems, and determines evaporation layer endpoints with high accuracy. This role involves monitoring multiple coating chambers, documenting coating run data, and communicating daily activities during quality meetings. The technician will also operate characterization/test equipment, maintain and adjust schedules to meet production demands, and prepare evaporation materials. Responsibilities include evaluating evaporation components, changing out worn parts, and reporting calibration/production run data to engineering. The Lead Coating Technician is accountable for the quality of the thin film coating process and assigned equipment, ensuring adherence to quality requirements for each run. Additionally, this role supports the cleaning area, oversees process equipment setup and operation, maintains inventory, performs minor maintenance, conducts audits, and trains new technicians. The position also involves providing engineering support and leading daily quality meetings.

Requirements

  • High school graduate with good math or science skills
  • 8 years coating or manufacturing experience and/or advanced education preferred
  • Bachelor or Technical degree preferred
  • Able to work in a demanding, fast-paced production environment

  • Must be able to lift, push, pull up to 50 lbs.
  • Bending and stooping required
  • May need to utilize step stool or elevated working platform to adjust within coating chamber and to disassemble/reassemble

  • This position is subject to a pre-employment physical evaluation associated with wearing a respirator.
  • This position must under-go annual physical evaluations associated with respirator use.

Responsibilities

  • Operation of thin film coating and test equipment
  • Retrieve proper designs according to set schedule and programs into coating system operations controller
  • Operate coating equipment according to set parameter and establishing procedures
  • Determine evaporation layer end points to high level of accuracy
  • Extract the maximum amount of data from each coating run and document accordingly
  • Monitor two high volume coating chambers at one time, while supporting peers in their operations
  • Communicate daily activities during quality meetings
  • Operate characterization/test equipment and interpret results
  • Maintain and adjust schedule to meet production demands and requirement
  • Evaluate design requirements and prepare evaporation materials accordingly
  • Evaluate evaporation components to assure proper operation requirements
  • Change out all worn/dirty components and replace with cleaned or new ones
  • Observe and extract the maximum amount of data from each calibration/production run
  • Evaluate data from calibration/production runs and reports to engineering
  • Use calibration equipment to assure proper setup and quality control
  • Double check design and run requirements before loading run
  • Document log information required for design operations
  • Accept responsibility for the quality of the thin film coating process and equipment assigned
  • Support cleaning area in loading of optical components
  • Oversee setup and operation of process equipment
  • Maintain inventory controls
  • Perform minor maintenance with minimal support
  • Take traces between coating runs to verify performance
  • Understand nonstandard system operations
  • Audit technicians for proper procedures and process consistency
  • Train new technicians according to training program and audit regularly
  • Provide engineering support with timely, accurate information
  • Lead daily quality meetings
  • Assist in employee performance evaluations
