Under the direct supervision of the Supervisor or Manager, the Lead Clinical Lab Scientist (Lead CLS) is responsible for coordinating the work of department staff and serving as the lead resource CLS to resolve problems, providing direction for personnel, and prioritizing and facilitating workflow to ensure the timely provision of lab services within the assigned section on a particular shift. Assists with the assessment and communication of equipment service issues and works with Management and Supervisors to ensure that resolution has been met. In the absence of the supervisor, serves in a leadership role to ensure continuity of service, including scheduling of staff. May attend meetings or participate in programs to improve operations or services. May assist supervisor with training of other personnel in new protocols, safety, and ongoing regulatory readiness. May also perform all duties as required within the CLS-III scope of work. Demonstrates proficiency of non-repetitive technically complex, moderate and high complexity procedures in one or more areas of the clinical laboratory. Manage quality control (QC) program of methodologies in use, verify acceptable QC before testing, and performs corrective action. Reviews monthly QC for compliance and trends (statistical analysis) and evaluate need for corrective action. Prepares and ensures specimen acceptability and accuracy of results. Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment with proper documentation. Lead in training and orientation of new staff, and assess competency before independently working in the section. Write and provide education on new/revised procedures. Participate in the annual interim self-inspection and bi-annual accreditation survey. Ensures area of responsibility is regulatory compliant. . Interacts with internal and external customers in a professional and courteous manner. Responsible for overseeing or running a section without supervisor presence on a daily basis or regularly perform specialized functions over and above duties of a CLS III. May also provide input towards annual performance appraisals and disciplinary counseling for CLS III and other lower job codes. Ability to speak and read English at a level that is sufficient to satisfactorily perform the essential functions of the position. Knowledge of standard office equipment (i.e., calculator, fax, photocopier) and personal computer and computer software skills (i.e., MS Windows, Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, internet, e-mail). Windows computer skills including proficient use of keyboarding, use of mouse or keys for functions such as selecting items, use of drop down menus, scroll bars, opening folders, copying and similar operations required upon employment or within the 1st two weeks of employment to perform the essential functions of the job.
