About The Position

This position is responsible for the daily operations and workflow of the shift in the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). The Lead Sterile Processing Technician will perform duties independently, work proficiently without supervision, and serve as a resource for all aspects of sterilization processing of surgical instrumentation. This role involves observing others, ensuring work completion, and verifying that staff members meet department standards and best practices. The Lead SPD Tech demonstrates advanced knowledge and skills in instrument handling and sterilization, provides education on these topics, and resolves problems with initiative and good judgment. They will prioritize tasks, assist the manager with reports and supply ordering, and ensure exceptional customer service. This position acts as a liaison with OR staff, surgeons, and other departments to resolve issues and enhance relationships. The Lead SPD Tech is responsible for the preparation of sterile instruments and supplies through cleaning, packing, sterilizing, and storing procedures, understanding sterilization principles and operating equipment. They also assist in cost containment, equipment distribution, and maintenance, and assume leadership in the absence of the SPD Supervisor. The role involves assembling case carts, inspecting and packaging instruments, cleaning and inspecting instruments according to manufacturer requirements, and supporting performance improvement efforts. They will notify supervisors of any variances and manage inventories and restocking of supplies and special carts. Additionally, the Lead SPD Tech makes rounds to collect and distribute patient care equipment, operates and monitors sterilization equipment, and serves as a resource for orientation and ongoing education for SPD staff, applying appropriate communication techniques. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved Sterile Processing Technician program or Surgical Technologist program or “On the Job” training in a hospital based training program
  • CRCST Certification by HSPA or CBSPD
  • CIS Certification By HSPA (must obtain with six months of hire date)
  • 1 year direct instrumentation experience
  • Ability to be trained to perform computer functions
  • Ability to make fast and accurate judgments when necessary
  • Able to develop and maintain good working relationships with all levels of staff, patients and family members
  • Able to organize work and work area with time constraints in a fast paced environment
  • Able to professionally and effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Knowledge of instrument processing
  • Must be familiar with the care and handling of a variety of instruments including powered and endoscopy equipment
  • Knowledgeable of supply distribution

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties independently, work proficiently without supervision and serve as a resource for all aspects of sterilization processing of surgical instrumentation.

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in instrument handling and sterilization.
  • Provide education on sterilization, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Demonstrate experience, training, initiative, good judgment, and resourcefulness in problem solving.
  • Prioritize tasks, assist the manager in preparing reports and ordering supplies, and ensure that the department's customer service is exceptional.
  • Serve as the customer service liaison with OR staff, surgeons, and other departments that SPD provides service to in order to resolve issues and enhance relationships.
  • Document pertinent data in a concise manner.
  • Prepare sterile instruments and supplies through cleaning, packing, sterilizing and storing procedures.
  • Understand principles of sterilization techniques and operate sterilization equipment.
  • Assist in departmental cost containment efforts.
  • Responsible for equipment distribution and maintenance.
  • Assume department leadership role in the absence of SPD Supervisor.
  • Adhere to hospital and department policies and guidelines.
  • Assemble Case Carts with instruments and supplies as indicated by the surgery schedule per individual hospital requirements.
  • Assemble, inspect and package instruments and equipment.
  • Clean and inspect instruments and equipment according to manufacturing requirements.
  • Support performance improvement efforts of the department.
  • Notify supervisor, manager or director of any variances in sterile processing, loads or equipment.
  • Inventory and restock special carts.
  • Inventory and restock supplies.
  • Make daily rounds to collect and distribute patient care equipment throughout hospital as required.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment.
  • Serve as a resource for orientation and ongoing education for Sterile Processing Department staff.
  • Apply appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication techniques at all times.
  • Other duties as assigned.
