About The Position

The Phlebotomy Technician – Lead/Supervisor, must meet the certification requirements of a CPT-1 supervises CPT-1 and as needed, performs the following. This role involves computer data entry, filing, telephone communication, and other clerical duties. The technician must possess adequate knowledge of laboratory test terminology and demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques for collecting specimens from all age groups. Responsibilities include processing various types of specimens (microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and blood bank), processing specimens for referral to reference laboratories, stocking and ordering supplies, and maintaining the cleanliness of storage areas and equipment. The role also involves processing or loading specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation, performing annual staff performance evaluations, providing staff training and orientation, evaluating and ensuring staff competency, and ensuring staff compliance with regulatory and laboratory/hospital policies. Additionally, the Lead Phlebotomy Tech is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment by evaluating and implementing PPE and safety devices, and actively participating in the collection and evaluation of QA data for Performance Improvement initiatives. Other tasks may be assigned by the department manager/director.

Requirements

Current and valid state Certification as a CPT I or II preferred.
Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current certification according to hospital requirement.
Minimum 2 years of clinical laboratory experience required.
High School diploma or equivalent.

Nice To Haves

1 year of previous supervisory/management experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Performs computer data entry, filing, telephone communication and other clerical duties.
Possesses adequate knowledge of the terminology of tests ordered in the laboratory.
Demonstrates proper phlebotomy technique and the use of equipment in collecting specimens from newborns to geriatric patients.
Processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens.
Processes specimens for referral to reference laboratories.
Stocks and orders routine supplies.
Maintains the cleanliness of storage areas, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas.
Processes or loads specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with established policy and procedures.
Performs annual staff performance evaluations.
Provides staff training and orientation.
Evaluates and ensures staff competency.
Ensures staff compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Assists in development and maintenance of policies and procedures appropriate to the department.
Ensures staff compliance with all laboratory and hospital policies.
Provides for a safe work environment in evaluating and implementing PPE and other safety phlebotomy devices.
Actively participates in the collection and evaluation of QA data for the development of Performance Improvement initiatives.
Other tasks or responsibilities may be assigned by the department manager/director.
