About The Position

This full-time Lead Cardiac Sonographer position is responsible for performing advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures, acting as a resource and trainer for other staff, and assisting with human resource responsibilities. The role involves performing complex echocardiograms, potentially assisting physicians in labs, identifying cardiac abnormalities, preparing patients, and maintaining lab equipment. The position also plays a key role in quality improvement initiatives, protocol implementation, and ensuring adherence to accreditation standards.

Requirements

Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS-AE) registration with Adult Echo issued by the ARDMS, or Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) registration issued by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.
Advanced training beyond High School that includes the completion of an accredited or approved program in Sonography.
Typically requires 5 years of experience in cardiovascular sonography which includes experience in digital quantification.
Demonstrated leadership skills such as delegation, team building, managing multiple priorities, problem solving, and decision making.
Excellent communication, interpersonal and patient service skills to work effectively with physicians, patients and other staff members.
Advanced knowledge and ability to learn and apply complex sonographic principles, instrumentation and techniques, and new computer techniques for the capture, display and analysis of echocardiograph data.
Advanced knowledge and proficiency in cardiovascular sonography procedures such as transesophageal and congenital.
Advanced knowledge of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
Intermediate computer skills.
Must be able to sit a 50 percent of the workday and stand and walk 20 percent.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist.
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs. over the head.
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force.
Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
Ability to frequently push/pull over 100 lbs.
Able to use hands and feet to operate equipment.
Functional speech, vision, and hearing.
Required to wear protective clothing (i.e., lead aprons, isolation gowns, protective eyewear, etc.) as needed.

Responsibilities

Acts as a resource to employees and students, which includes training/orienting, providing day-to-day work direction, and giving input on performance.
Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, monitors productivity, maintains appropriate staffing levels, directs efforts and provides guidance on more complex issues.
Assists with human resource responsibilities, which may include interviewing and selection of new employees, staff development, providing performance feedback, resolution of employee concerns, and employee morale.
Assists in interpreting department policies and procedures, and advises and updates staff on procedural changes.
Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound procedures such as M-mode, 2-D, Doppler and Color Flow Doppler utilizing a variety of equipment and techniques and makes the necessary measurements required for the interpretation to obtain accurate, high quality results.
May assist physicians in the Catheterization and Electrophysiology Labs by performing echocardiograph studies to aid them in proceeding with complex procedures to decrease risk factors.
Identifies and defines cardiac abnormalities and extends the scope of the examination appropriately, deviating from standard techniques when necessary and correlating invasive and noninvasive cardiac diagnostic test results with cardiac anatomy and function.
Prepares patients for procedures and obtains clinical history from the patient including cardiac related physical findings and pertinent laboratory data in order to adapt the imaging techniques to obtain comprehensive and diagnostic echocardiograms to alleviate the probability of erroneous clinical interpretation of the echocardiogram.
Assists in performing transesophageal studies with cardiologist, calculating appropriate measurements and sterilizes probe.
Records statistics and performs daily maintenance of the Echocardiography Lab and its equipment, reporting all malfunctions as appropriate.
In conjunction with supervisor, implements protocols as new technology evolves, and ensures system echocardiography standards are implemented and adhered to.
Identifies performance improvement opportunities within the department and facilitates change.
Works closely with medical director to develop and ensure quality processes and protocols are adhered to; works with physicians to perform quarterly reviews, and assists with ICAEL accreditation ensuring all policies, quality processes, reporting, etc. meet standards.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures.
