About The Position

We are seeking an experienced Lead Cabling Technician to join a leading global technology solutions provider in Tempe, AZ. This is a hands-on lead role responsible for the installation, modification, repair and maintenance of commercial voice, data, fiber optic and structured cabling systems. The Lead Cabling Technician will provide day-to-day direction to field technicians while remaining actively involved in installations. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with Cat5e, Cat6, copper and fiber optic cabling, terminations, testing, troubleshooting and fiber splicing in commercial environments.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of structured cabling experience in commercial environments.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Cat5e, Cat6, copper and fiber optic cabling.
  • Experience installing, terminating, testing and troubleshooting structured cabling systems.
  • Experience with single-mode and multimode fiber.
  • Experience with fiber optic splicing, including mechanical and/or fusion splicing.
  • Ability to test and certify copper and fiber installations using appropriate test equipment.
  • Knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, cabling standards and components.
  • Experience installing racks, patch panels, fiber enclosures and telecommunications closet infrastructure.
  • Ability to read blueprints, floor plans and technical drawings.
  • Ability to perform site surveys and identify installation requirements.
  • Experience leading or providing day-to-day direction to field technicians.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment within established procedures.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Associate's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation when required.
  • Daily travel to customer work sites is required.
  • Occasional out-of-town travel may be required.
  • Ability to follow company and job-site safety policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a field installation team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day activities of field cabling technicians and help ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently and according to customer requirements.
  • Install and oversee the installation of Category 3, Category 5/5e, Category 6 and fiber optic structured cabling systems.
  • Pull, organize, form, dress, label and terminate cable according to industry standards.
  • Install outlets and perform fire stopping and pre-termination work.
  • Perform site surveys and determine appropriate installation methods, tools and materials.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans and technical documentation.
  • Provide project updates to Project Managers and department leadership.
  • Work in both retrofit and new-construction environments and perform system cutovers.
  • Install telecommunications closet hardware, including backboards, connecting blocks, equipment racks, patch panels and fiber enclosures.
  • Terminate and install modular, coaxial and fiber optic connectors, including ST and SC connectors.
  • Test copper, multimode fiber and single-mode fiber to required certification standards using appropriate testing equipment.
  • Diagnose and correct copper and fiber optic cabling problems.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion fiber splicing.
  • Identify active circuits.
  • Install grounding infrastructure and perform grounding tests.
  • Remove and properly dispose of abandoned cabling.
  • Maintain knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, cabling standards and network components.
  • Follow applicable ANSI, EIA/TIA, BICSI and National Electrical Code standards.
  • Ensure safe work practices and proper use of required personal protective equipment.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service while working at client sites.
