About The Position

Human Resources announces a 1.0 FTE, Grade A-14 position (190 days). This role involves school-assigned coordination of ASL services, including scheduling and coordinating interpreting services, providing guidance to ASL interpreters, leading communication tasks for deaf/hard-of-hearing students, and acting as a liaison to administrators. The position also requires monitoring IEP requirements and ensuring equal access to interpreted materials. Additionally, the role involves student-assigned ASL interpreting, which includes interpreting instructional information and classroom/school building procedures from spoken English into sign language for deaf students. This includes interpreting for students during interactions with school personnel and for tests.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated strengths in organizational, human relations, and communication skills.
  • Competency in English and two-way communication in two “languages”— ASL and SEE.
  • Demonstrated professionalism in all communication with school and central office administrators, teachers, paraprofessionals, and other APS staff.
  • Ability to establish rapport and to communicate effectively with students, parents, and schools personnel.
  • Adherence to Codes of Ethics in an educational setting.
  • Ability to serve the needs of hearing-impaired students individually and/or several students simultaneously.
  • Completion of a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and have State Board Certification (VQAS) level 3 or above or, EIPA Certification with a score of 3.5 or higher
  • OR Completion of a bachelor’s degree and National Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID)
  • A minimum of two years as an ASL Interpreter is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Five years of experience and/or supervisory experience is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Schedules and coordinates interpreting services at assigned elementary, middle, and/or high school levels.
  • Provides guidance to ASL interpreters.
  • Leads, oversees, and participates in all communications tasks required to assist deaf/hard-of-hearing students.
  • Acts as the primary liaison to school-based administrators for all interpreting/transliterating services delivered.
  • Monitors IEP requirements, student services, and school needs to support and ensure equal access to all interpreted materials.
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned.
  • Interprets instructional information in all subject areas from spoken English into sign language for deaf students in the district. Instructional information includes lectures, student discussions, and any other vital classroom communication.
  • Interprets classroom and school building procedures into sign language.
  • Interprets for students during interactions with school personnel.
  • Interprets directions for tests - classroom and standardized.
