Lawyer - In-House Legal Counsel (Remote)
About The Position
BIS Safety Software is seeking a Lawyer - In-House Legal Counsel who is sharp, curious, and energized by the challenge of building something. This is a hands-on role for someone comfortable operating independently, with broad legal knowledge and deeper expertise in specific areas. The ideal candidate will have a strong drive to understand the business, be resourceful, and proactively identify and address potential problems. The role requires a solid foundation in corporate and commercial contracts, particularly SaaS and technology agreements, and a working understanding of legal risk in a growing software business. The successful candidate will report directly to leadership and serve as the primary legal resource across the organization, partnering with the Risk and Compliance team, coordinating with external counsel, and facilitating business operations.
Requirements
- 3+ years of legal experience with a strong foundation in commercial contracts, legal risk, and compliance (ideally in a software or technology environment)
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Ability to take ownership of problems and find a way forward
- Proactive nature: identify risks early, ask the right questions, and do not wait for issues to land on your desk
- Ability to operate independently, manage competing priorities, and know when to escalate
- Curiosity about how businesses work and a genuine desire to understand the company's business
- Clear and practical communication skills
- Humility, eagerness to learn, and comfort asking for help when needed
- Pragmatic, business-minded approach to legal risk
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta or willingness to do so upon successful selection
Nice To Haves
- In-house experience, particularly within a SaaS or technology-driven organization
- Familiarity with privacy, data protection, and security concepts in a software business context
- Experience supporting a company in the $10M-$50M revenue range
- Exposure to contract lifecycle management tools or contract automation
