About The Position

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is seeking a Law Enforcement Program Specialist at the Office of Victim Compensation Services. This position investigates compensation claims for approval of payment as outlined in appropriate statues and division policies and procedures. Claims must be processed in a timely and efficient manner. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a point of contact for the gathering of investigative information from law enforcement to complete recommendations of award or denial for submitted claims, according to NCGS Chapter 15B and appropriate policies and procedures. The employee must be able to comprehend, interpret, and apply NCGS Chapter 15B. Also, must be able to exercise judgement in investigation claims to make recommendations for award or denial supported by NCGS Chapter 15B. Employee reviews work for compliance with appropriate statues, regulations and any other requirements established by appropriate authority. This position maintains considerable knowledge of Victim Compensation and related NC General Statues. This position requires a high level of personal contact and public speaking and must be able to articulate clearly and accurately. This position works independently and as a member of the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, or one of the social sciences, preferably including coursework in research, methodology, from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience in the criminal justice field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience doing investigative procedures and/or techniques.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office software such as Word and/or Excel and/or PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain an effective working relationship among law enforcement agencies and executives.
  • Work involves the investigation of claims submitted for resolution through the Victim Compensation fund to verify legitimacy of claims, detect fraud, and verify submitted law enforcement information.
  • Maintain an effective working relationship among court officials, such as district attorneys, victim witness program officials, victim advocacy groups, law enforcement agencies, and other governmental agencies and private organizations.
  • Work involves maintaining a high degree of visibility among law enforcement personnel and constituent groups to promote program services.
  • Responsible for testifying in court and before the Commission and other personnel and agencies as may be appropriate.
  • Responsible for projects as may be assigned by the Director.
