About The Position

This is a probationary position responsible for delivering law enforcement services throughout the County. The role involves patrolling the County to maintain law and order, responding to calls for service, executing arrests, investigating criminal complaints, and serving civil processes. The position also includes executing warrants, transporting prisoners, and maintaining courtroom decorum. The starting salary is $34.17 per hour/$71,074 annually, with a $10,000 recruitment incentive upon hiring and completion of the training academy. Opportunities for overtime, compensatory time, holiday pay, shift differential, and uniform allowance are available. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office is an equal opportunity employer.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with 10 years of verifiable U.S. residency.
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.
  • Must pass entrance level exam with or without reasonable accommodation (min. score 70%).
  • Must pass physical agility testing.
  • Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check.
  • Must pass medical exam and drug/alcohol screening.
  • Must pass polygraph exam.
  • Must pass psychological screening.
  • Must provide handwriting sample for review.
  • Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
  • Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills.
  • Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the Annotated Code of Maryland, Harford County Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code, Harford County Sheriff's Office Rules and Regulations, Harford County government resources, state and federal agencies, District Court Commission system, Circuit and Juvenile Court processes and Law Enforcement Code of Ethics.
  • Ability to become skilled in the use of firearms, defensive driving and self-defense techniques.
  • Ability to complete Firearms Qualifications, Physical Training, Academic Standards and other training by the Sheriff's Office.
  • Ability to testify in court.
  • Knowledge of problem solving techniques, grammar, spelling, arithmetic and verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Visible tattoos are permitted if they are not offensive, indecent, extremist, racist or sexist.
  • No visible tattoos will be permitted on the face or head.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol the County to maintain law and order.
  • Respond to calls for service.
  • Execute on-view arrests.
  • Check County businesses for security.
  • Respond to reports of criminal complaints and complete necessary investigations.
  • Deliver personal service upon inhabitants of the County of civil process issued out of Circuit and District Courts of Harford County and also those civil papers forwarded from other jurisdictions within the state and out of state.
  • Execute by arrests all warrants issued.
  • Transport prisoners to and from penal institutions and courts in and out of Harford County.
  • Maintain courtroom decorum during trials.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.
