About The Position

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Inspector General, is seeking a LAW ENFORCEMENT CAPTAIN. This is an open competitive opportunity. The position requires a full-time law enforcement officer with full powers of arrest, functioning as an Investigator. The primary responsibility is to assist the Inspector General in conducting special internal inquiries and investigations relating to alleged violations of law, departmental procedures, policies, rules, conflicts of interest, ethics violations, or corruption. This includes coordinating and/or conducting investigations into complaints against Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters within the department. The role is highly confidential and crucial for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the department.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of sworn law enforcement or sworn investigative experience.
  • Three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must meet Florida Statute 943 requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driver license.
  • All fields in the Candidate Profile must be completed.
  • Work history, duties and responsibilities, hours worked, supervisor, and formal education fields must be filled out.
  • Responses to Qualifying Questions must be verifiable in the Candidate Profile.
  • Must pass a background screening, including fingerprinting, as a condition of employment.
  • Must pass a urine drug test as a condition of employment.

  • College education from an accredited institution can substitute at the rate of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours per year for a maximum of one year of the required supervisory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts internal investigations into allegations of criminal or administrative misconduct by employees, including witness interviews, surveillances, stakeouts, electronic monitoring, forensic evidence gathering, inspection of facilities, property and equipment, coordinating polygraph examinations, and utilizing forensic techniques to develop evidence.
  • Obtains warrants, makes arrests, and assists in the prosecution of those arrested or administratively charged with misconduct.
  • Develops, prepares, and maintains investigative reports and files, including investigative plans, summaries, witness statements, and all related documentation.
  • Coordinates investigative activities and maintains liaison with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, prosecutors, and other criminal justice agencies.
  • Testifies at trials and hearings in connection with investigations resulting in arrests or disciplinary action.
  • Conducts background investigations of applicants and members of the department as assigned by the Inspector General and prepares written reports.
  • Coordinates investigations or inspections of departmental functions with the internal auditing staff.
  • Acts as liaison with other law enforcement agencies or public officials relating to areas of common interest.
  • Participates in mandatory training, qualifications, and retention activities.
  • Performs other investigative or law enforcement activities as directed by the Inspector General or the Commissioner of the department.
  • Conducts other related assignments and duties as required.
