About The Position

The City of Mississauga is seeking a law clerk to join its Municipal Law Section, Legal Services Division. You will draft contracts and by-laws, conduct research, benchmarking and legal searches, and prepare corporate reports, legal documentation and correspondence. The City of Mississauga’s Legal Services Division is a full-service law department that handles a wide variety of interesting and rewarding files that directly impact the way people live, work and play in Mississauga.

Requirements

  • Law Clerk Diploma or Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario Certificate (or equivalent education)
  • Minimum 7 years experience as a law clerk working with contracts and by-laws
  • Proven knowledge of legal concepts, principles and terminology, legal procedures, statutes and regulations relating to contracts, by-law and municipal law
  • Excellent by-law and contract drafting and research skills
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret policy and procedures, determine relevancy of legal issues, identify unresolved issues, review requests and determine completeness and accuracy
  • Ability to compose, edit and proofread legal documents, reports and correspondence
  • Demonstrates concern for accuracy and pays attention to detail
  • Ability to handle high volume of files and high pressure, time sensitive matters
  • Professional demeanour and excellent interpersonal skills for communicating with client groups, lawyers and the public
  • Strong organizational, fact-finding and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and with sound judgment to both follow instructions with minimal supervision and take initiative as required
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, including intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook), Adobe and electronic document management/filing system

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate contracts and related documents, including amendments, statements of work and non-disclosure agreements
  • Prepare and draft municipal by-laws, corporate reports and other documents
  • Review and interpret contracts and by-laws, update legal templates, and maintain a precedent database
  • Prepare and coordinate the registration and removal of property standards orders on title using Teraview
  • Prepare contracts and other legal documents for execution
  • Respond to enquiries, both internal and external, regarding contract obligations and revisions, by-laws and general municipal law enquiries
  • Conduct, analyze and make recommendations regarding title searches, corporate searches, and corporate records and documents
  • Serve as a point of contact for contract review and by-law requests, and coordinate access to and support from lawyers as needed
  • Conduct research and benchmarking
  • Liaise and provide technical knowledge, advice, recommendations and appropriate assistance to the Deputy City Solicitor, Legal Counsel and Department staff where appropriate
  • Perform other duties as assigned
