About The Position

Shulman & Partners LLP is seeking a detail-oriented and highly organized Law Clerk to join their family law team in the Ottawa office. This is a hands-on role where the Law Clerk will manage the mechanics of a file, including drafting documents, tracking deadlines, and ensuring file accuracy, to allow lawyers to focus on strategy and client care. The firm emphasizes a culture of pro-activity, professional integrity, and client commitment, encouraging challenging ideas and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Law Clerk supporting a litigation practice; family law experience is a strong asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort handling sensitive client communications with clients, opposing counsel, and the court.
  • ILCO certification or an LSO-approved paralegal license is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with the Family Law Rules, court processes, and legal documentation.
  • Comfortable with legal software; experience with Clio and DivorcePath is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, draft, and revise legal documents, including Applications, Separation Agreements, Parenting Plans, Pleadings, Affidavits, Financial Statements, Net Family Property Statements, and Conference Briefs.
  • Open and close files in accordance with firm protocols and LSO requirements and keep electronic and hard-copy files accurate and current.
  • Act as a key point of contact between the legal team and clients, opposing counsel, and external experts.
  • Schedule meetings, court dates, and deadlines, and monitor file progress to ensure nothing is missed.
  • Docket time accurately and maintain billing records in Clio.
  • Support the legal team with other administrative and litigation-related tasks as needed.
